Did you know? Connemara
Connemara's name comes from the Irish 'Conamara', meaning 'descendants of Conmacne', an ancient tribal group that ruled the region.
The region is home to Connemara ponies, a hardy breed native to the area that has been exported worldwide and is recognised as Ireland's only native horse breed.
Twelve Bens mountain range, which dominates Connemara's landscape, contains Ireland's most westerly peaks and offers some of the country's most dramatic hiking terrain.
The Quiet Man, one of John Ford's most famous films, was shot in and around Connemara in 1951, cementing the region's status as a major Irish film location.
Connemara's bog and moorland habitat supports rare plant species and is designated as a Special Area of Conservation under EU law.
The region receives between 200–250 days of rain annually, making it one of Ireland's wettest areas, yet creating the lush green landscapes visitors expect.
