About this activity

Guided ascent of Diamond Hill in Connemara National Park, a 7km looped trail gaining 500m elevation with panoramic Atlantic views. A moderate hike led by a local expert who contextualises the landscape's geology, blanket bogs, wildlife, and cultural heritage.

Join us on a guided hike in scenic Connemara National Park, on a moderate 2-3 hour climb to the top of Diamond hill along one of the four trails that are accessible from the park grounds. It is a looped walk that is 7km in length and has a height gain of roughly 500m. Your local guide will share his knowledge about the park, its flora and fauna, the blanket bogs that are a feature of the area as well as the area’s local history and wildlife.

It is one of the only walks in the area that has a path from top to bottom therefore you do not require hiking boots. It is worth noting that there are steep sections at the top and it can be very windy up there, but the views are well worth it! Bring a bottle of water and suitable clothes for the weather on the day.

This hike is also available as a private experience.

Highlights

  • Summit views across Galway Bay, the Twelve Bens, and Atlantic coastline
  • Learn about blanket bog ecosystems and Irish mountain flora from your guide
  • Well-maintained path from top to bottom—no scrambling required
  • Loop trail design means no backtracking
  • Local history and wildlife insights woven throughout

Insider tips

  • Start early to secure parking at the visitor centre and beat afternoon wind exposure at the summit
  • The steep sections near the top and exposed ridge can intensify wind—pack a windproof layer even if the base feels calm
  • Blanket bog is fragile; stay strictly on the path to protect this unique habitat

Good to know

  • Duration is 2–3 hours active hiking; allow extra time for photography and guide commentary
  • Hiking boots not required due to maintained path, but sturdy walking shoes with grip recommended for wet conditions
  • Bring water bottle and weather-appropriate clothing; conditions change rapidly in Connemara
  • Private group hikes available—enquire for group rates or custom timing
  • Meet at Connemara National Park visitor centre; confirm exact meeting point and arrival time with operator
