Insider tips
- ★Book in the late spring or early autumn to avoid both summer crowds and winter dampness that can obscure the mountain views
- ★Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip — the routes involve uneven terrain and steep sections around the convents and sanctuaries
- ★Ask your guide to point out the best vantage points for photography at Peninha; golden hour here is particularly dramatic
- ★Bring a jacket even in warm months; mountain weather changes rapidly and upper elevations can be surprisingly cool
