About this activity

A comprehensive 12-hour private day tour from Lisbon exploring two of Portugal's most significant historical sites: the medieval university city of Coimbra, home to one of Europe's oldest universities, and the remarkably preserved Roman archaeological site of Conimbriga. This deep-dive experience combines Renaissance architecture, ancient ruins, and centuries of Portuguese intellectual heritage in a single journey.

At 200 km North of Lisbon, the city of Coimbra is full of history, home of one of the oldest universities in the world, with its magnificent Joanine Librar, the entire University Complex, the Monastery of Santa Cruz, the medieval houses... Close to Coimbra is the Roman Archeological city of Conimbriga and a place to visit.

We will leave Lisbon at 8 am for enjoying the full day. We will pick you up, in your hotel in Lisbon, Cascais, Oeiras or Sintra, please, contact us in advance to organize.

It is a private day tour with maximum of 8 persons.

Monument fees and lunch is not included.

Highlights

  • Joanine Library — ornate Renaissance masterpiece with hand-painted ceilings and rare manuscripts
  • Coimbra University complex — explore the historic academic grounds and stunning royal palace architecture
  • Monastery of Santa Cruz — Gothic and Manueline architectural gem in the city centre
  • Conimbriga Roman ruins — well-preserved temples, houses, and mosaics from the 1st–4th centuries
  • Medieval old town — wander narrow streets and traditional residential architecture
  • Private group experience — maximum 8 people for personalised attention and flexibility

Insider tips

  • Book monument tickets in advance or ask your guide to arrange them; queues can be long during peak season, especially at the university and Conimbriga
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip — both Coimbra's old town and Conimbriga involve uneven medieval streets and archaeological terrain
  • Plan your lunch independently in Coimbra's historic centre; many small tascos and restaurants near the Cathedral offer traditional Portuguese fare at modest prices
  • Visit Conimbriga early in the tour (cooler morning hours) before exploring Coimbra's steeper streets in the afternoon

Good to know

  • Hotel pickup available from Lisbon, Cascais, Oeiras, or Sintra — arrange location with operator before booking
  • Monument entrance fees and lunch not included in base price
  • Private group limited to 8 passengers maximum
  • Early 8 am departure from Lisbon; full-day commitment (12 hours total, including 4-hour round-trip travel)
  • Substantial walking involved at both sites; some uneven surfaces and stairs at university and archaeological areas

Who it's for

History and archaeology enthusiasts seeking deeper context beyond standard Lisbon toursUniversity and academic heritage fansCultural travellers interested in Portuguese Renaissance and Roman historyCruise passengers and short-stay visitors maximising time from Cascais/Lisbon base

Best time to visit

Visit in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October) for comfortable walking conditions and fewer crowds at Conimbriga. Morning visits to the university and Roman site are ideal before afternoon heat; summer visits are possible but busy and hot, while winter offers shorter queues but potentially wet conditions on historic streets.
