About this activity

Cycle through Bulgaria's most historically charged mountain peaks, linking the 1877 Shipka Monument with the iconic Communist-era Buzludja structure. This 6-hour ride weaves dramatic Balkan scenery, beech forests, and panoramic ridge views that span north-to-south Bulgaria, combining adrenaline with compelling 19th and 20th-century heritage.

The majestic Balkan has many different faces. Nowhere else, nature and history are not an indivisible whole here, and the visit of Shipka and Buzludja will make you believe that the Time Machine really exists!

Shipka with the Monument of Freedom, at the very top, will take you back in 1877 and to the decisive battle of the Liberation War! Buzludja with its "flying saucer" will make you experience a surreal sense of an equally surreal epoch-that of Communism.

In both places, however, you will feel not only their historical importance but you will be fascinated by the beautiful mountain landscape. You will step one foot in the North and one in South Bulgaria and you will draw strength from the panoramic views and the wonderful rock formations of Eagle nest!

On the way between Shipka and Buzludja you will pass through the beech forests, and no wonder you can see wild animals, including red deer and roe.

Insider tips

  • Start early to catch the best light on ridgelines and avoid afternoon thunderstorms common in mountain passes
  • Bring extra water and energy snacks—the altitude and historic stops mean you'll spend more time climbing than on typical rides
  • Download offline maps; mobile signal is patchy on exposed ridges between the two monuments

Good to know

  • 6-hour duration includes cycling, climbing, and extended stops at both sites—expect 3–4 hours actual saddle time
  • Terrain mixes paved mountain roads and gravel forest tracks; intermediate to advanced fitness required due to sustained elevation gain
  • Bring windproof jacket, sunscreen, and sturdy cycling shoes; temperature drops significantly at altitude
  • Meeting point and bike logistics will be confirmed by supplier upon booking
