About this activity

Chase whales and dolphins across Iceland's longest glacial fjord aboard a nimble RIB speedboat during the ethereal Midnight Sun, when daylight never fades and marine life remains equally active as daytime hours. Small groups of just 12 passengers ensure an intimate, personalised experience guided by a naturalist and skilled captain.

Experience the excitement of zooming into Iceland's longest glacial fjord as we look for whales and dolphins in the ever glowing Midnight Sun, on this 2 hr. RIB boat tour available each summer from 15th June until 14th August.

With just 12 passengers per boat, this intimate adventure offers a personalised and up-close experience like no other. Our state of the art boats are designed for speed and agility, allowing us to navigate the fjord swiftly and increase your chances of spotting whales, dolphins, and a variety of bird species, all while respecting their natural environment.

Expertly led by our onboard naturalist and skilled captain, this tour is crafted for those who seek both the serenity of nature and the excitement of adventure, all under the mystical light of Iceland's evening sun.

A 2 hr. speed-boat whale watching tour starting from the floating pier in Akureyri, where we can get you faster and closer to the whales. As whales never fully sleep, you can expect the same chance to see them, as on our day tours! If you have a passion for nature and love for adventure or just want a romantic yet exciting night out, then this is the tour for you!

Highlights

  • High-speed RIB boat designed for agility and close encounters with marine life
  • Witness whales and dolphins under Iceland's continuous evening glow (summer only)
  • Explore Eyjafjörður fjord, Iceland's longest glacial waterway
  • Expert naturalist narration on whale behaviour and Arctic ecology
  • Spot seabirds and coastal wildlife in pristine Akureyri waters

Insider tips

  • Book this tour for late evening departures (around 21:00–22:00) to experience the most surreal Midnight Sun lighting and fewer crowds
  • Whales are equally active at night—bring binoculars and a camera with good low-light capability to capture the unique lighting conditions
  • Dress in waterproof layers; RIB boats can be splashy and Akureyri's coastal wind picks up in summer evenings

Good to know

  • Tour runs 15 June to 14 August only; book early as Midnight Sun dates fill quickly
  • Meeting point: floating pier in Akureyri; arrive 15–20 minutes early
  • 2-hour duration includes navigation time; actual whale-spotting time varies
  • RIB boats are open-sided with minimal seating—not ideal for mobility restrictions; contact operator in advance if accessibility needed
  • Bring waterproof jacket, gloves, and sun protection (continuous daylight causes unexpected UV exposure)
