About this activity

Combine two iconic Icelandic experiences in a single 8-hour adventure: horseback riding across the scenic Vellir farm followed by a whale-watching boat safari. This all-in-one tour maximizes your time by pairing close encounters with Icelandic horses and Atlantic marine life, with a light lunch break at Hótel Eldhestar.

Are you short on time but longing for activities? On this tour you have the chance to experience two big beautiful animals on the same day, the horse and the whale! We start the tour by riding for 1.5-2 hours at our farm Vellir. After the riding tour we have light lunch at Hótel Eldhestar before driving you to the Whale Safari boat.

Please note: The tour is suitable for all levels of riding experience from beginners to advanced. During booking process, we ask our clients to inform us about their riding experience, which helps us to choose the right horse for everyone. Beginners and experienced riders ride together. We always try to tölt as much as possible, but do not gallop for safety reasons.

Highlights

  • 1.5–2 hours of horseback riding on working farm Vellir with horses suited to your skill level
  • Tölt (comfortable Icelandic horse gait) as primary riding style for smooth, accessible riding
  • Light lunch at Hótel Eldhestar between activities
  • Full whale-watching boat safari from Hveragerði harbour
  • Mixed-ability groups; beginners and experienced riders welcome
  • Seamless land-to-sea itinerary covering two major animal encounters

Insider tips

  • Inform guides of your exact riding experience during booking so they assign the best-matched horse for your abilities and comfort
  • Wear waterproof layers for both riding and the boat; wind and spray intensify on the ocean
  • Arrive early to the farm to acclimate to your horse and settle into the saddle before setting off

Good to know

  • Riding uses tölt gait (smooth, four-beat) rather than gallop, making it accessible for most fitness levels
  • Beginners and advanced riders share the same tours; guides pace accordingly
  • Bring or wear waterproof jacket and trousers, closed-toe shoes/boots, and warm layers
  • Total duration 8 hours includes riding, lunch, transport to harbour, and boat time
