Things to Do in Hambantota

Hambantota was the birthplace of the ancient spice trade, serving as a major port for Arab and Chinese traders who sought cinnamon, cardamom, and other spices from Sri Lanka's southern coast.

The city's deep-water port, completed in 2010, is one of the deepest natural harbours in the Indian Ocean and has become strategically important in global shipping routes.

Hambantota is home to Sri Lanka's only salt pans still in operation, where families harvest sea salt using traditional methods passed down through generations.

The nearby Mirissa Beach, just 30 minutes away, is a world-renowned blue whale watching destination where marine biologists record some of the highest concentrations of blue whales globally from November to April.

The region experiences two distinct monsoon seasons, making timing crucial: the Southwest Monsoon (May–September) and Northeast Monsoon (December–February) create vastly different weather patterns.
