About this activity

Chase Iceland's marine giants aboard a nimble RIB speedboat designed for intimate wildlife encounters. With a maximum of 12 passengers and expert captains, you'll hunt whales and puffins from Reykjavík's Old Harbour while covering more ocean than traditional vessels—increasing your odds of close-up sightings.

Experience the thrill of our original RIB boat whale watching tour, designed for small groups with a maximum of 12 passengers per boat. Departing daily from the Old Harbour in Reykjavík, this premium adventure runs from April through October. With a specially trained crew and a certified RIB captain, you’ll be in expert hands as you explore the seas and search for wildlife.

Our custom-engineered RIB boats allow you to get closer and faster to the whales and puffins than larger vessels, enhancing your chances of witnessing these incredible animals up close. The stability and safety of these boats also allow us to cover a larger area, further increasing the likelihood of sightings. As you journey back to Reykjavík, enjoy a unique view of the city’s coastline, including landmarks such as the Sun Voyager sculpture and the stunning Harpa Concert Hall.

Highlights

  • Small-group RIB boats (max 12) for agile, closer wildlife tracking
  • Expert crew and certified captains specialising in whale behaviour
  • Dual sightings: whales and puffins in their natural habitat
  • Wider search range and faster response to animal movements
  • Coastal return views of Sun Voyager and Harpa Concert Hall

Insider tips

  • Dress in waterproof layers even in mild weather; RIB boats mean splashes and wind exposure at speed
  • Position yourself on the boat's outer edge for optimal photography and wildlife spotting
  • Mid-morning departures often offer calmer seas and clearer visibility than afternoon slots

Good to know

  • Duration is 2 hours total; allow extra time for check-in at Old Harbour
  • Seasonal operation: April–October only; peak humpback and minke whale season is June–August
  • Life jackets and waterproof suits provided; bring seasickness medication if prone to motion
  • Unsuitable for very young children or those with limited mobility due to RIB boat design
