About this activity

Combine hands-on reindeer herding with immersive Arctic wildlife exploration on this full-day Rovaniemi excursion. Visit an authentic family-run reindeer farm on the shores of a peaceful lake, then explore Ranua Wildlife Park's 2.5km of forest boardwalks to encounter Lapland's native animals in one curated setting.

This full-day trip will offer you a great insight into local wildlife, as you will visit two locations – one of the most authentic reindeer farms in Rovaniemi and the famous Ranua Wildlife Park. The two combined will give you a perfect opportunity to see and learn about the Arctic animals.

Your guide will first drive you to one of the most traditional reindeer farms in Lapland. The family of reindeer herders are based just outside of Rovaniemi, on the lovely shores of a peaceful lake. From our perspective, they provide the best experience possible when it comes to both knowledge and service.

Taking in the beautiful surroundings at the farm, you will learn about the reindeer from the herders. They will show you around the traditional farm, and because it is the first visit of the day, you will have a chance to feed them their favourite food – lichen, which to reindeer is like chocolate! The visit will end with a very friendly time around the fire in the company of a herder who will answer all your questions and share their passion with you.

A day full of Arctic animals!

After this great time with the reindeer, your guide drives you to Ranua Wildlife Park, where you enjoy a nice buffet lunch at the restaurant before exploring the park.

At the wildlife park, you can follow the 2.5-kilometres wooden boardwalks through the forest where you get to see all the Arctic animals in one place. This is a rare opportunity to meet the local animals that reside in Lapland and other parts of the Arctic. As you walk around the park, your guide will share with you their knowledge of the animals and other aspects of life in Lapland.

The animals you can spot in the Ranua Wildlife Park include the polar bear, brown bears (not in wintertime though, as they are hibernating), predatory birds, owls, wild boars, musk oxen, otters, Arctic foxes, wolves, wild reindeer, wolverines, moose, and many others!

At the end of the tour, you will return to Rovaniemi with a great insight into Arctic wildlife, and a memory full of lovely animals!

In all our activities, our groups are limited to 8 people maximum (Note: At the Reindeer Farm and in Ranua Wildlife Park can be more people as  the tours there are public). It is very important for us to provide you with the best experience possible, and avoid mass tourism. This way, your guide will know you better and will be able to address all your needs and answer your questions. As we usually say – the smaller the group, the bigger the experience!

NOTE: Would you like to live a complete wildlife experience? Check our Arctic Animal Immersion safari (click HERE) which combines this Reindeer Farm and Ranua Wildlife Park trip with a bear-watching overnight next to the Russian border!

Insider tips

  • Arrive at the reindeer farm early in the day when animals are most active and food interactions are available—afternoon visits often miss the feeding opportunity.
  • Wear waterproof, insulated boots and layers; lakeside farm locations are exposed, and boardwalks can be slippery in wet conditions.
  • Bring a camera with a good zoom lens; wildlife viewing distances vary, and some animals are more elusive than others.
  • Ask herders specific questions about seasonal herding practices and reindeer migration—they're passionate and stories vary by family.

Good to know

  • Duration is 8 hours total including transport; plan for approximately 2 hours at the farm and 3–4 hours at the wildlife park.
  • Buffet lunch is included at Ranua; inform the operator of any dietary restrictions in advance.
  • Boardwalks are generally accessible but uneven in places; sturdy hiking boots required. Mobility limitations should be discussed with the operator beforehand.
  • The reindeer farm is located outside Rovaniemi near a lake; pick-up and drop-off details will be confirmed upon booking.
  • Dress warmly even in summer; Arctic conditions change rapidly, and lakeside locations are typically cooler.

Who it's for

Wildlife enthusiasts and photographers seeking close encounters with Arctic faunaFamilies with children interested in hands-on animal interactions and Sámi cultureNorthern Europe travellers wanting authentic local experiences beyond typical tourist circuitsAdventure seekers combining nature immersion with cultural education

Best time to visit

Visit in winter (December–February) for the most authentic experience and potential for reindeer sleigh rides or aurora viewing in the evening. Summer (June–August) offers 24-hour daylight and easier travel, though reindeer are less active. The farm is most engaging in early morning before midday heat or afternoon fatigue sets in.
