About this activity

Explore Iceland's most visually striking highland landscape on a full-day private tour featuring kaleidoscopic rhyolite mountains, active volcanic craters, and geothermal hot springs. This 12-hour adventure combines dramatic geology with cascading waterfalls and secluded valleys, ideal for those seeking raw Icelandic wilderness away from crowded routes.

Landmannalaugar is an area of incredible beauty, with its rugged lava fields, colourful rhyolite mountains a rock type that creates a full spectrum of dazzling colour, hot springs and craters from recent volcanic activity. Historically, Landmannalaugar was known for its natural geothermal pools, and that is where the name derives from. On the way to Landmannalaugar we will stop at few places, such as Thjófafoss Waterfall, Háifoss and Hjálparfoss Waterfalls, as well as Ljótipollur Crater and Gjáin, a tiny valley with small picturesque waterfalls.

Highlights

  • Hike among multicoloured rhyolite peaks with reds, greens, and blues from mineral-rich rock formations
  • Bathe in natural geothermal hot springs nestled in the highlands
  • Visit Ljótipollur Crater and explore evidence of recent volcanic activity
  • Discover Gjáin's hidden valley with intimate waterfalls and lush terrain
  • Stop at Thjófafoss, Háifoss, and Hjálparfoss waterfalls en route
  • Navigate Iceland's interior on a private, tailored itinerary with flexible pacing

Insider tips

  • Waterproof layers are essential—weather changes rapidly in the highlands, and thermal pool access requires swimwear and a way to dry off
  • Book for late spring through early autumn (June–September) when mountain roads are reliably passable; winter access is severely restricted
  • Bring a good camera and arrive early at Landmannalaugar proper to capture the mountains in morning light before afternoon clouds roll in

Good to know

  • 12-hour total duration includes all travel, stops, and hiking; plan for 4–6 hours of moderate walking across varied terrain
  • Private tour means customizable stops and pace, though Landmannalaugar itself is remote and requires high-clearance vehicle access
  • Bring swimwear, towel, sturdy hiking boots, sun protection, snacks, and at least 2 litres of water; facilities are minimal in the interior
  • Hotel pickup/drop-off in Reykjavík is typically included; confirm meeting time and location when booking
