About this activity

Explore Madeira's rugged northwest coast in a small-group 4x4 adventure, ascending from coastal cliffs to mountain plateaus via forest tracks. This eight-hour journey combines dramatic geology—volcanic pools, waterfalls, and laurel forest—with authentic village stops and local culture.

Take an exhilarating tour of the Northwest side of Madeira in an open-roof 4x4!  Starting with pickup from your hotel or accommodation, climb aboard for a ride to Ribeira Brava - a beautiful city along the coast with amazing cliff-views of the sea surrounded by the gorgeous scenery of the Risco Falls and Laurel Forest.  Your guide will take you down the old forest roads to Encumeada, Ginjas, Paúl da Serra, Fanal and Porto Moniz.  You will have a chance to swim in the volcanic lava pools, visit Seixal and São Vicente, take photos, visit small villages, and do some local shopping.

Group Maximum: 8 travelers

Highlights

  • Ribeira Brava coastal town with Risco Falls and cliff panoramas
  • Forest roads through Encumeada, Paúl da Serra plateau, and Fanal
  • Natural volcanic lava pools at Porto Moniz for swimming
  • Mountain passes and viewpoints across northwest Madeira
  • Village visits to Seixal and São Vicente with local shopping
  • Small group (max 8 people) with hotel pickup and drop-off

Insider tips

  • Bring swimwear and a towel—the volcanic pools are refreshing and worth the dip, especially on warm days.
  • Porto Moniz villages fill quickly; arrive early for parking and to explore before crowds.
  • The old forest roads can be rough; wear secure footwear if you plan to walk and photograph.
  • Request a naturalist guide if interested in Madeira's endemic laurel forest ecology.

Good to know

  • Full-day tour includes 8 hours total; plan for early start and late afternoon return.
  • Open-roof 4x4 means weather exposure—bring sun protection, a light rain jacket, and layers for elevation changes.
  • Pickup from your hotel or accommodation is included; confirm location when booking.
  • Maximum 8 travelers ensures a more personal experience than larger tours.
  • Comfortable hiking shoes recommended; some forest trails and rocky pool areas require grip.

Best time to visit

Visit May through October for warmest weather and clearest skies; early morning (typical start times) avoids midday heat on plateau drives. Avoid November–March for frequent rain and cloud cover that obscures views.
