Things to Do in Caniço, Madeira

Cânico is a fishing village on Madeira's south coast, historically known for its abundant tuna and scabbardfish catches that still supply local restaurants today.

The village sits at the base of dramatic volcanic cliffs that rise over 1,500 metres, making it one of Madeira's most spectacular coastal settings.

Cânico's underwater ecosystem is so rich that it's a protected marine reserve and a top diving destination in the Atlantic, with depths reaching 40+ metres.

The village has remained largely undeveloped compared to nearby Funchal, preserving its authentic fishing community character and traditional stone harbour.

Local fishermen still use traditional wooden boats called 'xavelhas' and 'caíques', some painted in bright colours, continuing centuries-old maritime practices.
