About this activity

A comprehensive 14-hour day trip from Tbilisi into western Georgia's mythological heartland, combining the dramatic Martvili Canyon with the underground splendour of Prometheus Cave and cultural exploration of ancient Kutaisi. This tour captures three distinct landscapes—river gorge, subterranean formations, and historic city—in a single immersive journey.

Early in the morning, at 7: o'clock we will start the journey to western Georgia 220 km. We are crossing Rikotski Pass and Kutaisi is waiting for us soon. We are in the Kolkheti lowlands, covered with many legends. Here the Argonauts under the command of Jason stole the golden fleece, here in the surrounding mountains Prometheus was riding on a rock, here is the land of the eminent warriors of antiquity, here amazing events took place.

Highlights

  • Martvili Canyon: navigate turquoise waters through steep limestone cliffs
  • Prometheus Cave: explore stalactites, stalagmites and underground river passages
  • Kutaisi old town: walk through streets steeped in Argonaut and ancient warrior legend
  • Rikotski Pass: scenic crossing into the lush Kolkheti lowlands of western Georgia
  • Full-day cultural and nature immersion covering 220 km from Tbilisi

Insider tips

  • Wear water-resistant shoes and clothes for canyon activities; the turquoise water is colder than it looks
  • Bring a light jacket—Prometheus Cave stays cool year-round despite the summer heat outside
  • Start hydrated before the 7 AM departure; stops are limited during the long drive to western Georgia

Good to know

  • Early 7 AM pickup from Tbilisi; plan for 14 hours total including travel time
  • Martvili Canyon involves wading and swimming in sections—moderate fitness helpful, not extreme technical skill required
  • Prometheus Cave tour is underground and involves uneven terrain; bring a torch or headlamp if you have one
  • Group tour format; meals not mentioned—bring snacks or budget for local restaurants in Kutaisi
