About this activity

Explore Iceland's volcanic heartland on this 9-hour private Superjeep tour combining Hekla volcano—one of history's most active and feared peaks—with the otherworldly geothermal landscape of Landmannalaugar. Weather permitting, ascend to the eruptive ridge for panoramic views before soaking in natural hot springs surrounded by multicolored rhyolite mountains.

After boarding our Superjeeps in Reykjavik, we cross fertile South Iceland
farmlands, opening up to grand views of Hekla volcano's snow-covered top
(elev. 1491m). Hekla's next eruption is long overdue and expected at any time
so you just might catch the show. Since Iceland's human settlement in the
ninth century, Hekla's 20-30 eruptions have ranged from pretty little tourist
attractions to explosive disasters. There's no wonder Hekla has long been taken
for the entrance to Hell for damned souls. Conditions permitting, we may make
it up onto the volcano’s eruptive ridge, ca 900m above sea level, where the air
is crisp and the views incomparable. Pushing deeper into Iceland's eruptive
interior, we take in and touch scenery so unreal it is repeatedly used for other-
world Hollywood A-films. When we arrive in Landmannalaugar we can hike, or
dip in Iceland's most famous natural hot pool, or both. When you havet been
suitably geothermally cooked, it’s time to head north through “does-this-really-
exist” looking surroundings with stop at Gjáin (Games of thrones site) before
driving towards Reykjavík.

Highlights

  • Drive to Hekla volcano (1,491m) with potential ridge ascent at ~900m elevation
  • Soak in Landmannalaugar's natural hot pool amid dramatic volcanic terrain
  • Optional hike through Iceland's most visually striking geothermal zone
  • Stop at Gjáin waterfall and gorge (Game of Thrones filming location)
  • Travel through lunar-like landscapes used for major film productions
  • Cross South Iceland farmlands with views of snow-capped volcanic peaks

Insider tips

  • Bring a swimsuit and waterproof bag—the hot pool is a highlight but weather can be unpredictable
  • Wear layers; high-altitude winds on Hekla's ridge are significantly colder than the base
  • Go in summer (June–August) when mountain roads are fully passable; shoulder seasons risk closures
  • Ask your driver about real-time volcanic activity and recent eruption history—Hekla's next event is scientifically overdue

Good to know

  • Private Superjeep tour—high-clearance 4WD required for interior routes; standard cars cannot access these roads
  • Duration is 9 hours total; factor in ~2 hours driving plus activity time at each stop
  • Mountain road access is weather-dependent; tours may be rerouted or adjusted based on conditions
  • Hot spring water is naturally heated; bring towel and change of clothes
  • Hiking at Landmannalaugar is optional; inform guide of fitness level to customize pace
