About this activity

Combine Iceland's marine wildlife with contemporary art on this half-day adventure: spot whales and seabirds in Faxaflói Bay during an afternoon cruise, then ferry to Viðey Island at dusk to experience Yoko Ono's Imagine Peace Tower—a striking illuminated beacon visible against the night sky and Reykjavik's glittering skyline.

This tour combines two interesting sights. After exploring the wonders of the whales and seabirds it's ideal to stop by in the harbour area and have a lovely dinner before heading out to Viðey island looking at the beam of light representing world peace.

Whales & Imagine Peace Tower

Whale Watching in the afternoon and an evening Imagine Peace Tower tour on Viðey island.

You start the day with a whale watching tour at 13:00 in the afternoon. After exploring and learning more about the wonders of the whales and seabirds Faxaflói offers you return to the harbour (approx. 3-5 hrs later), having some time to walk around the immediate area or enjoy a lovely meal in the harbour.

At 20:00 the ferry over to Viðey island where the Imagine Peace tour is situated, departs. The tour sets off from the Old Harbour in downtown Reykjavik and sails towards the magical world of Videy Island, a 20-minute boat ride away, where we take a guided walk to the Imagine Peace Tour and learn about this magnificent work of art as well as the history and nature of the island. The view of Reykjavik by night is also not to be missed. If you’re lucky, the northern lights might even appear overhead.

Pickup / Drop off service available for additional fee.

Highlights

  • Whale watching in Faxaflói Bay with sightings of humpbacks, minke whales, and seabirds
  • Guided tour of the Imagine Peace Tower on Viðey Island
  • Panoramic views of Reykjavik's harbour and cityscape after dark
  • 20-minute scenic ferry crossing to a culturally significant island
  • Chance to see Northern Lights if conditions align (seasonal)
  • Time for dinner in the Old Harbour between activities

Insider tips

  • Book the afternoon departure (13:00) to maximize daylight for whale spotting, which increases wildlife sighting odds
  • Use the 3–5 hour break between activities to grab fresh seafood at Old Harbour restaurants—it's worth the wait rather than rushing the island tour
  • Dress in warm, waterproof layers; even summer evenings are cold on the water, and wind exposure is significant

Good to know

  • Total duration is approximately 5 hours (whale watching + ferry + island tour); book early enough to catch the 20:00 ferry departure
  • Pickup and drop-off service available for an additional fee; confirm meeting point at Old Harbour if not using this option
  • Whale sightings are not guaranteed; tours operate year-round, but marine activity peaks April–October
  • Viðey Island tour includes a guided walk; comfortable walking shoes essential; paths are accessible but uneven in places

Who it's for

Wildlife enthusiasts and photographers seeking authentic Icelandic marine experiencesArt and culture lovers interested in Yoko Ono's iconic installationsCouples and groups wanting a romantic evening combining nature and contemporary artVisitors with limited time seeking multiple Reykjavik highlights in one excursion

Best time to visit

Visit April through October for the highest probability of whale sightings and calmer seas. Evening departures (20:00 to Viðey) mean clear skies and darker conditions ideal for viewing the illuminated Peace Tower, with Northern Lights possible in autumn and winter months (September–March) if solar activity is strong.
