What exactly is David Gareja?

David Gareja is a complex of ancient cave monasteries carved into desert cliffs near the Turkish border, dating back to the 6th century. It's one of Georgia's most significant early Christian monastic sites and now a UNESCO-listed cultural monument.

Why are the mountains so colourful?

The badlands around Jandari and Mravaltskaro contain exposed mineral-rich geological layers—red iron oxides, yellow sulphur deposits, and purple manganese create natural striping. Erosion continuously reshapes the landscape, intensifying the colour contrast.

How far is this from Tbilisi?

David Gareja is approximately 70–80 km southeast of central Tbilisi. The 12-hour tour includes 3–4 hours of driving (round-trip) plus time spent at multiple monastery sites and viewpoints.

Is this tour physically demanding?

It requires moderate fitness. You'll walk uphill on rocky terrain to enter caves and climb to monastery viewpoints, but routes are well-established and not technical. The main challenge is the desert heat and sun exposure rather than extreme hiking.

Can I do this in a regular car or does it need to be a jeep?

A high-clearance jeep or SUV is essential. The final approach roads to the monasteries are unpaved, rocky, and steep. A standard sedan will not reach the main sites safely.

Essentials: at least 2 litres of water, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, sturdy hiking shoes, and a light layer for early morning/evening. A camera for the coloured mountains is highly recommended. Bring snacks as food options are limited on the route.
