About this activity

Immerse yourself in authentic Lapland winters over four days of snowshoeing, ice fishing, and Northern Lights hunting near Rovaniemi. This package combines traditional Finnish wilderness skills with the Arctic's most magical natural phenomenon, guided by local experts who know the best spots for sightings and catches.

DAY 1

08:30 SNOWSHOEING AND ICE FISHING TOUR (4 hours)

This tour lets you experience Lapland nature at its best by combining two local activities - snowshoeing through forests snowshoeing through the forests and ice fishing on an immense frozen lake. Your guide will drive you around 20 kilometres away from Rovaniemi to find the perfect peaceful place to start your trip. Before heading into the forests, your guide gives you instructions on using the snowshoes and walking on snow. As you snowshoe through the quiet, snowy landscapes, you immediately feel the harmony of Lapland nature surrounding you.

Soon you will end up in an immense open area made of ice and snow. It is time to find a promising spot on the lake and try to catch your lunch! Your guide will help you drill your hole in the ice, and will teach you the basic techniques of how to ice fish. Then, it is just a matter of time and patience before you can feel the first bites! This is just the perfect moment to appreciate the silence that reigns over the lake. Campfire snacks (and your fish grilled if you catch one!) included.

EVENING: NORTHERN LIGHTS WILDERNESS TOUR WITH CAMERA (4 hours)

Get ready to experience the beauty of the Aurora Borealis! The weather forecasts and the solar activity reports are always checked during the day so that we can adapt the departure of the tour and get the best chance to observe the Northern Lights. This excursion will offer you the opportunity to head into the Lapland wilderness and explore the Arctic nature. You may take a short walk through the very old, white and snowy forest or to the top of some fells, you may cross a hanging wooden bridge over powerful rapids, you may also enjoy the silence on a lake beach or may stand in the middle of an immensity of ice and snow... Hopefully, with Auroras dancing over your heads!

As this excursion is an Aurora hunt, you may get the chance to visit up to 3 locations and increase your chance to observe the Northern Lights. We invite you to take your own camera with you to capture the Auroras. In all cases, your guide will be equipped with a professional camera and will take as many pictures as possible (feel free to ask him!) of you and the Northern Lights. A link to download all the pictures will be sent to you the next day. The Northern Lights Wilderness Tour lasts 4 hours. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your accommodation.

DAY 2

9:00 SKI TREKKING SAFARI IN LAPLAND (4 hours)

Backcountry skiing offers the best way to explore untouched Arctic nature! Your professional guide takes you from Rovaniemi directly into the Taiga forest, giving you the chance to explore breathtaking Lapland scenery with backcountry skis, leaving your track in deep, untouched snow. Backcountry skiing, or off-piste skiing, is a great way to explore remote areas of Lapland covered in deep snow.

Unlike alpine skiing and cross-country skiing, which are practised on groomed trails, backcountry skiing allows you for a more adventurous trip through hilly terrains, forests and lakes. As the skis are equipped with skin, they allow you to go uphill, and downhill without excessive speed. Equipped with skins, the skis allow both uphill and downhill movement without excessive speed. Like snowshoeing, the technique requires little practice, making it comfortable and easy, even for beginners!

Your guide will choose a location that best fits the level and the needs of the group. They will also provide you with safety instructions and teach you some basic techniques on how to use the skis in fresh snow. Refreshments and a typical Finnish barbecue snack are included. After the visit, your guide will drive you back to Rovaniemi. The afternoon is free - keep some time for yourself, meet Santa Claus or visit the Arktikum Museum on your own to complete a perfect day! We also invite you to contact us if you wish to plan an extra tour on that afternoon!

DAY 3

08:50 AUTHENTIC REINDEER FARM VISIT (2 hours 15 minutes)

Today, you will meet the most iconic animal of Lapland! Your guide will drive you to one of the most traditional reindeer farms in Lapland, located on the lovely shores of a peaceful lake. While taken in the surroundings, you will learn about the reindeer from the herders. They will show you around the traditional farm and because it is the first visit of the day, you will be given a chance to feed them their favourite food, lichen. During this visit, you will also have the opportunity to test your driving skills with a short loop sleigh ride of 400 metres, before having some time around the fire in the company of a herder who will answer all your questions and share their passion with you.

This visit gives you a great insight into the reindeer and reindeer husbandry.

After the visit, your guide will drive you back to Rovaniemi, where you will have time to have lunch on your own, before your afternoon activity.

13:30 VISIT AN ETHICAL HUSKY KENNEL WITH 10 KM HUSKY SAFARI (3 hours and 45 minutes)

In the afternoon, you will visit a lovely husky kennel just a 30-minute drive from Rovaniemi. At the farm, the mushers greet you with the excited barking of their lovely dogs. They introduce you to your dog team and provide safety instructions along with tips on driving the sleigh.

Once ready, you will embark on a great sledge ride adventure through the winter scenery for about 10 kilometres (around 1 hour / 1 hour 15 minutes depending on the snow conditions). You are always 2 adults maximum for the sledge ride (one driving, and one passenger sitting in the sleigh) and you will have the possibility to switch the driver and passenger halfway.

After the safari, the mushers will take time to share their lifestyle, explain to you what the job of a musher consists of, how they train their dogs and answer all your questions around an open fire. All the dogs are very photo enthusiasts, so do not forget to bring your camera with you!

EVENING: NORTHERN LIGHTS WILDERNESS TOUR WITH CAMERA (4 hours)

Catch your second chance to capture the beautiful Northern Lights! If the conditions allow it, your guide will take you to a different route so that you can enjoy a different experience and get to see more of the Winter scenery of Lapland. Your Aurora guide will have their professional camera with them and you will receive all the pictures by email the next day.

DAY 4

9:00/10:00 FAMILY-FRIENDLY FROZEN WATERFALLS TOUR (6 hours) OR WILDERNESS SURVIVAL TOUR (3 hours and 30 minutes)

Choose your all-day excursion from those two options:

(1) You will begin your journey with a scenic drive from Rovaniemi to Korouoma Canyon – a 30-kilometer-long canyon known for its towering cliffs and mesmerizing waterfalls. Upon arrival, your guide will lead you on a shorter hike, perfect for families. Along the way, you’ll soak in the peaceful beauty of this natural reserve, with opportunities to spot local wildlife. The frozen waterfall, create a magical backdrop for a truly unique outdoor experience.

After enjoying the wonders of Korouoma, we’ll head back to the car for a quick drive to the next adventure. Our next stop takes us to Auttiköngäs Nature Trail, where a short walk leads you to the charming wooden bridge where you can see magnificent Auttiköngäs waterfall. After exploring the waterfall, we’ll gather around an open fire for a BBQ lunch. Enjoy the food while your guide shares stories about the wonders of Lapland. You’ll even learn how to build a fire using traditional methods!

Insider tips

  • Bring a thermos or ask your guide about hot drink stops—standing still watching for fish and lights gets cold fast, and warm beverages make a real difference.
  • Ask your guide about solar activity reports at briefing; higher activity = better Aurora odds. Tours adapt departure times based on real-time forecasts.
  • Wear moisture-wicking base layers under provided suits; sweat freezes and ruins your comfort. Bring hand and foot warmers from the town pharmacy.
  • Pack a basic phone tripod or small camera mount if you want to photograph the lights hands-free while staying warm.

Good to know
