About this activity

Explore the Hanthana mountain range, a 1,240-metre-high chain of seven peaks spanning 20 km from Kandy to Galaha, offering immersive hiking through misty highlands, freshwater springs, and biodiverse forest. This day-long adventure combines moderate trekking with authentic encounters with Sri Lankan mountain ecosystems that have inspired local poets and naturalists for generations.

The Hanthana mountain range in Kandy is popular among those who like to go hiking, camping, bird watching, and be close to nature in any way. Local songwriters, too, have lyricized the scenic beauty and tranquility of these mountains.

Located 1240 m above sea level, the Hanthana mountain range stretches all the way from Kandy city to the town of Galaha, 20 km south.

The freshwater springs on the western end of Hanthana feed the waters of the Mahaweli River, and the tributaries of the river separate the individual hills of the range. In total, there are seven individual peaks, the highest being Ura Kanda.

Highlights

  • Summit Ura Kanda, the highest peak in the Hanthana range
  • Trek through pristine mountain forest with endemic bird species
  • Discover natural freshwater springs feeding the Mahaweli River
  • Navigate ridgelines separating distinct mountain valleys
  • Experience panoramic views across Kandy's surrounding landscape

Insider tips

  • Start early in the morning to avoid afternoon cloud cover and maximise summit visibility
  • Bring binoculars for birdwatching—the range is a hotspot for endemic and migratory species
  • The western peaks offer the clearest water sources; refill at springs rather than carrying all water from base

Good to know

  • Total duration is 7 hours including transport and breaks; wear sturdy hiking boots for uneven terrain
  • Bring sun protection, rain jacket (mist and showers common at altitude), and 1.5+ litres of water
  • Meeting point in Kandy; minivan/bus transport to trailhead included
  • Moderate fitness required; elevation gain and technical scrambling on some sections
