About this activity

Trek into Finland's most dramatic landscape via Pyhä-Luosto National Park, where a 2.5-billion-year-old gorge plunges 220 meters and feeds the stunning Pyhänkasteenputous Waterfall. This guided hike weaves together raw geology, Ice Age history, and Sámi cultural heritage—making it far more than a walk in the woods.

Hiking along Finland’s deepest gorge to the Pyhänkasteenputous (meaning: “Holy Baptism”) Waterfall provides an unforgettable experience. The steep walls of this unique gorge rise up to 220 meters. The Isokuru Ravine is about 2.5 billion years old, and several ice ages have shaped the rugged landscape.

During the hike you will learn about the geological history of the area, as well as the nature and the history of the Sámi people. Hear how our nature have nurtured both the body and soul of the Sámi people since the Ice age.

Starting time is flexible for every summer day, because it is also possible to visit in the gorge by evening time. You just book the day, there is a question what time you would wish to do the tour and we will be in contact with you. =)

Shorter tour is easy walking of 5 km and we go same road back.

If you want to do longer tour have a extra service from the shopping card and we will go 10km road around the fell Pyhätunturi. This tour continues from the waterfall to Sacrifice ridge and Karhunjuomalampi where people have been living in Stone age and go around the fell. Duration for the longer tour is around 4 hours.

Highlights

  • Finland's deepest gorge with 220-meter walls shaped by multiple ice ages
  • Pyhänkasteenputous Waterfall at the heart of the ravine
  • Insights into Sámi people's historical connection to this landscape
  • Flexible start times including optional evening hikes in summer
  • Two route options: 5 km easy loop or 10 km extended circuit with Stone Age heritage sites

Insider tips

  • Book the evening departure for unique light and fewer crowds—Lapland's midnight sun makes this magical in June/July.
  • The longer 10 km route visits Sacrifice Ridge and Karhunjuomalampi (Stone Age settlement sites); ideal if you have 4 hours and want deeper cultural context.
  • Wear sturdy waterproof hiking boots; gorge walls channel moisture and the terrain is uneven despite being 'easy walking.'

Good to know

  • Two options available: 5 km easy walk (2.5 hours) or 10 km extended route (4 hours)—select at booking.
  • Start times are flexible and coordinated directly with you after booking; evening hikes available in summer.
  • Bring layers and weatherproof jacket; gorge microclimates can shift quickly even in summer.
  • Route retraces the same path on shorter option; longer route is a loop around Pyhätunturi fell.
