About this activity

Explore Chile's most dramatic high-altitude landscapes in a single day: pristine alpine lagoons, striking red volcanic formations, and South America's largest salt flat teeming with three flamingo species. This comprehensive circuit combines geology, wildlife, and indigenous culture at elevations reaching 4,200 metres.

We begin to pick up our passengers, at their hotels, from 06:30 AM. Our first stop, after 1 hour of travel, is in the Miscanti and Miñiques altiplanic lagoons located at 4200 meters above sea level. and formed due to the eruption of the volcano of the same name. When we finished, we moved to Piedras Rojas which is a volcanic conglomerate formed from the oxidation of the iron present in that place, accompanying this is the Aguas Calientes Salt Flat. The next stop is in the Atacameño town of Socaire, located at 3,500 meters above sea level. in which you can see the cultivation terraces and visit the patrimonial church of the town. Afterwards, we visit the Atacama Salt Flat, the largest in Chile and which is part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve. Here we stop at the Chaxa lagoon to be able to observe the 3 types of flamingos (Parina chica, parina grande, flamenco chileno) in addition to other species that inhabit the lagoons of the salar. As the last stop we will arrive at the town of Toconao, where we will appreciate the church and the bell tower of San Lucas. After this we return to San Pedro de Atacama around 4:30 p.m.

Insider tips

  • Bring layers and a windbreaker – high altitude means rapid temperature swings and strong Andean winds, even in summer
  • Start early (06:30 AM pickup): morning light is best for photography at Piedras Rojas and wildlife spotting at Chaxa lagoon
  • Pack sunscreen and sunglasses; the combination of altitude, reflective salt, and thin atmosphere intensifies UV exposure
  • Arrive with a light snack or breakfast; the schedule is full and lunch stops aren't guaranteed on all operators' versions

Good to know

  • Hotel pickup begins at 06:30 AM; confirm your accommodation location the day before
  • Return to San Pedro de Atacama approximately 16:30 (4:30 PM)
  • High-altitude activity (up to 4,200m): allow time for acclimatisation if arriving from lower elevations; consult guides about altitude sickness risk
  • Minivan or small-group transport typical; gravel/unpaved roads throughout
  • Bring warm clothing, hat, sturdy walking shoes, water (1.5–2 litres), and any personal medications
