Iceland has no mosquitoes despite having plenty of other insects.
Departing Þórsmörk (you are transported to here in super jeeps), the hike ascends to Fimmvörðuháls, site of the 2010 eruptions. Crossing fresh lavas (still warm), the new craters Magni and Móði are seen standing proud.
The hike continues between Eyjafjallajokull (of 2010 fame) and Myrdalsjokull (with Katla below) before descending by the Skógá river to Skógafoss. Breakfast here concludes the hike.
Transfer Hvolsvöllur (18.00) > Þórsmörk and Skógar > Hvolsvöllur included.
Distance: 24 kms; elevation 1,050m; hike 9-12hrs; total trip 11-14hrs.
