Things to Do in Hvolsvöllur

Hvolsvollur is the largest town in South Iceland's Rangárvallasvæði region and sits at a crossroads between the Ring Road and routes to Iceland's interior highlands.

The town's name comes from 'hvoli' (small knoll) and 'völlur' (plain), referring to the small hill that rises above the settlement.

Hvolsvollur is home to the Hvolsvöllur Folk Museum, which preserves artifacts from local settlement history dating back over a thousand years.

The town serves as the gateway to Landmannalaugar, one of Iceland's most dramatic hiking destinations, accessible via Routes F208 and F225 in summer months only.

Hvolsvollur's population of around 800 people makes it a quiet rural hub, yet it has all essential services for travellers including a supermarket, pharmacy, and petrol station.

The surrounding Rangárvallasvæði valley is renowned for its lush agricultural land and horse breeding tradition, with local farms offering horseback riding tours.
