About this activity

Combine a dramatic 8-hour open-roof 4x4 adventure through Madeira's volcanic peaks, plunging valleys, and Europe's highest cliff with a 3-hour catamaran dolphin and whale-watching expedition. This full-day immersion pairs rugged mountain terrain and authentic local stops with prime cetacean spotting along the south coast.

Starting our tour with amazing views over Funchal´s Bay, we drive uphill to Boca dos Namorados, at nearly 1000 mts high above sea level, where we will be able to see the famous village of Curral das Freiras (Nun's Valley). Going higher to Boca da Corrida through a spectacular off road with an elevation of about 1200 mts, you will be astonished by the main volcanic complex and highest mountains of the island. From there, we go downhill to Jardim da Serra, place known by its cherry production. Here we will have a quick stop, where you can enjoy a portugues coffee, natural tea or the very traditional drink Poncha (not included), freshly made by a local. We will continue towards Cabo Girão, the highest cliff in Europe and second in the World with 580 mts, better known for its renovated viewpoint with suspended glass floor. Later, we will finish our tour at the warm and traditional fishing village of Câmara de Lobos visiting a Madeira Wine Lodge, where our guests will have the opportunity to taste (included) the famous Madeira wine (Sweet / Medium Sweet / Dry / Medium Dry).

After the Jeep tour, our guests will be dropped off at Funchal’s Harbor to start the Dolphin & Whale Watching Trip. Come on board on the Catamaran for a relaxing trip along the south coast of Madeira. The boat trip takes 3 hours with strong possibilities of watching Dolphins & Whales in their natural habitat. During the trip, the crew will give you detailed information about the cetacean species that you are able to see.In the summer months there is the possibility of swimming below Cabo Girao cliff. In case you don’t see any cetaceans, we offer a second boat trip. This trip ends in Funchal’s Harbor.

Highlights

  • Summit Boca dos Namorados (1,000m) overlooking the iconic Nun's Valley
  • Navigate winding off-road passes to Boca da Corrida (1,200m) amid volcanic peaks
  • Walk the glass-floored viewpoint at Cabo Girão—Europe's tallest cliff at 580m
  • Taste Madeira wine at a working lodge in the historic fishing village of Câmara de Lobos
  • Spot dolphins and whales from a catamaran along Madeira's protected south coast

Insider tips

  • Request a window seat in the 4x4 during descent to Câmara de Lobos for unobstructed photo angles of the coast
  • Bring layers; mountain temperatures drop significantly above 1,000m even on sunny days
  • The local poncha (traditional spirit) at Jardim da Serra is potent—order a small pour or share with your group
  • Dolphin sightings are most reliable May–October; calm seas improve both comfort and spotting odds

Good to know

  • Bring: sunscreen, sturdy walking shoes (rocky terrain and glass floor), water bottle, and light jacket for elevation changes
  • The 4x4 has an open roof but is not fully open-sided; moderate fitness needed for short uphill walks at viewpoints
  • Hotel pickup/drop-off not specified; confirm meeting point at Funchal Harbor beforehand (where the boat tour departs)
  • Madeira wine tasting is included; food and non-alcoholic beverages at stops are not
  • Seasickness-prone travellers should take motion-sickness medication before the 3-hour catamaran leg
