About this activity

This 7-hour guided excursion takes you from Queimadas through Madeira's ancient Laurissilva cloud forest to the spectacular Green Cauldron waterfall and emerald pool. A combination of forest immersion and dramatic mountain scenery, ending at one of the island's most photogenic natural features.

Special tour starting at the Queimadas house where we can enjoy the beauty and feel the freshness of the Laurissilva. The course is magnificently green interspersed with views over immense mountains, valleys and also over the village of St. George and some waterfalls.

You will find some tunnels along the route so it is recommended to use head protection as well as the use of a flashlight and suitable footwear.

Upon reaching the immense waterfall of the Green Cauldron the view is breathtaking with the cascade water surrounding the frozen and crystalline lagoon. Apart from the beauty is undoubtedly very relaxing.

It is recommended to wear suitable footwear, baton, flashlight and water.

Highlights

  • Walk through UNESCO-listed Laurissilva subtropical forest with endemic flora
  • Navigate historic water tunnels carved into the mountainside
  • Pass multiple cascades and viewpoints overlooking São Jorge village and distant valleys
  • Reach the Green Cauldron's crystalline lagoon surrounded by towering waterfall
  • Experience pristine alpine air and misty mountain atmosphere

Insider tips

  • Bring a headlamp or strong flashlight—the tunnels are dark and slippery; a head torch leaves both hands free for rocky sections
  • Start early in the morning to avoid midday mist that obscures distant views and makes tunnels more treacherous
  • The final pool is shockingly cold; wear quick-dry clothes and secure valuables in waterproof bags if you plan to wade or swim

Good to know

  • Sturdy waterproof hiking boots essential—routes include stream crossings, wet rocks, and muddy sections
  • Bring trekking poles to reduce knee strain on steep descents and improve stability in tunnels
  • Flashlight/headlamp required for tunnel sections; claustrophobic travellers should note low clearances
  • Pack 2+ litres of water and snacks; limited facilities between Queimadas and the waterfall
  • Not suitable for young children, severe mobility issues, or those uncomfortable in semi-dark, narrow spaces

Who it's for

Hiking enthusiasts seeking off-the-beaten-path forest and waterfall experiencesAdventure travellers comfortable with moderate technical difficulty and enclosed spacesNature photographers wanting dramatic waterfalls and lush landscape shotsShore excursion guests (cruise passengers) with good fitness levels and 7 hours available

Best time to visit

Visit between May and September for drier conditions and clearer mountain views; early morning (before 9 a.m.) is ideal to beat afternoon mist and crowds. Avoid winter months (November–March) when frequent rain makes tunnels hazardous and visibility poor.
