Jvari Monastery perches dramatically on a rocky outcrop 2,000 meters above sea level where the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers converge, making it one of Georgia's most recognizable landmarks.
Built in 586 CE by the Byzantine emperor's orders, Jvari is one of the oldest churches in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.
The church's name means 'Cross' in Georgian, and it originally held a large wooden cross erected by Saint Nino, Georgia's patron saint, in the 4th century.
Jvari featured prominently in Alexandre Dumas's novel 'The Caucasus' and has inspired artists and photographers for centuries due to its silhouette against dramatic mountain ridges.
The monastery sits at the intersection of the historic Silk Road and ancient trade routes, strategically positioned to guard Iberia's northeastern frontier.
