Start your tour at Jvari Monastery, a 6th-century orthodox monastery near Mtskheta. Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the monastery stands on a rocky mountain above the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, overlooking Mtskheta, the old capital of Georgia.

Continue to Zhinvali Water Reservoir, located on the Georgian Military Highway. Learn the history of this Soviet dam, constructed in the 1980s. Then, arrive at the Ananuri Fortress, the seat of the Eristavis (Dukes) of Aragvi. Discover the intriguing plots of this feudal dynasty that ruled the area from the 13th century. Explore the site of numerous historic battles and take in the magnificent scenery — ideal for landscape photography.

After Ananuri Fortress, have lunch in Pasanauri, the homeland of the most famous traditional Georgian food, Khinkali. Admire the Friendship Monument of Georgian and Russian people in Gudauri. Located on the Georgian Military Highway between Gudauri ski resort and the Jvari Pass, the memorial consists of a large round stone arch and concrete structure overlooking the Devil's Valley in the Caucasus Mountains.

Then, arrive at Kazbegi, and explore one of the most beautiful places in Georgia: Gergeti Trinity Church. The church is located under Kazbegi Mountain, 2170 meters above sea level, and offers spectacular panoramic views of the entire valley. Enjoy the serene natural beauty of this isolated marvel.

Finish your tour at the Rooms Hotel Kazbegi. Relax with a cup of coffee in their stylish restaurant and soak up the stunning views of Kazbegi.

Insider tips

  • Book the early 08:00 departure to maximize daylight at Gergeti and avoid afternoon crowds; the 12-hour schedule ends around 21:00–21:30, so bring layers for evening mountain chill.
  • Jvari and Gergeti both require short uphill walks on rocky terrain — wear sturdy hiking shoes rather than sneakers.
  • The khinkali lunch stop in Pasanauri is the cultural and culinary centrepiece; ask your guide to recommend a family-run spot over tourist-focused restaurants.
  • Bring a camera with a wide lens or phone tripod; the river confluences, fortress crenellations, and church silhouettes against the Caucasus are exceptional for landscape and portrait shots.

Good to know

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off included in Tbilisi; confirm your hotel address and contact number 24 hours before.
  • 12-hour tour covers ~200 km with winding mountain roads; not suitable for severe motion sickness without medication.
  • Wear layers: mornings are cool (5–10°C in winter, 10–15°C in shoulder seasons), afternoons warm slightly, evenings drop again at altitude.
  • Lunch is included or arranged in Pasanauri; inform the operator of dietary restrictions (vegetarian/vegan khinkali available) in advance.
  • Mobile reception is spotty above Gudauri; download offline maps or exchange contact details with your guide.

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer clear skies, wildflower backdrops, and moderate temperatures ideal for walking and photography. Summer (June–August) brings afternoon cloud cover at high elevations; winter routes may close due to snow, though the Jvari–Ananuri–Pasanauri loop typically remains passable if roads are cleared.
