About this activity

This full-day group tour traces Georgia's spiritual and cultural evolution across four significant sites—from the pre-Christian rock-hewn city of Uplistsikhe through medieval Mtskheta and its iconic monasteries, to the fortress ruins of Gori. You'll walk through 3,000 years of Georgian history in a single itinerary, connecting ancient pagan settlements with early Christian landmarks.

In one day you will have time to visit two amazing places in our region: Uplistsikhe, without which it is difficult to imagine the pre-Christian, ancient world of Georgia, and Mtskheta, without which it is impossible to understand the era of early Christianity and the Middle Ages. When viewing cities, you will visually trace the path that Georgia has gone from the time of the early Bronze Age to the adoption of Christianity.

Highlights

  • Uplistsikhe: explore honeycomb cave dwellings and ancient theatre carved into living rock
  • Mtskheta: visit Svetitskhovleba Cathedral, Georgia's holiest site, with panoramic Mtkvari river views
  • Jvari Monastery: 6th-century clifftop church overlooking the confluence of two rivers
  • Gori Fortress: walk castle ramparts with sweeping views of the Shida Kartli region
  • Guided narrative connecting Bronze Age settlements to medieval Christian Georgia

Insider tips

  • Start early to beat afternoon heat and crowds at Uplistsikhe's narrow cave passages
  • Wear sturdy shoes with good grip—all sites involve uneven stone steps and sloped terrain
  • Bring water and snacks; only basic refreshments available at sites themselves
  • Ask your guide about hidden chambers in Uplistsikhe; many tourists miss the upper levels

Good to know

  • 9-hour duration includes travel between sites (approximately 1.5 hours by minibus each way from Tbilisi)
  • Moderate physical fitness required: significant climbing, uneven surfaces, and steep descents at each location
  • No elevator access at any site; not suitable for limited mobility or young children
  • Bring sun protection, comfortable walking shoes, and layers (caves stay cool year-round)
  • Tour operates in small groups; hotel pickup/drop-off typically included from central Tbilisi
