Amboseli National Park sits directly beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak at 5,895 metres, offering some of the world's most iconic elephant-and-mountain photography opportunities.
The park's name comes from the Maasai word 'ambos', meaning 'salty', referring to the seasonal salt licks that attract wildlife during dry seasons.
Amboseli is home to one of the largest concentrations of African elephants in Kenya, with over 1,600 elephants regularly observed in the park.
The park contains the Amboseli Swamp, fed by underground springs from Kilimanjaro's snowmelt, which remains green even during Kenya's driest seasons and creates a critical wildlife haven.
Amboseli was established as a national park in 1974 and covers 392 square kilometres of diverse habitats including grasslands, acacia woodlands, and volcanic ash plains.
The park is a major research site for wildlife biologists, with decades of elephant behavioural studies conducted here by the Amboseli Trust for Elephants.
