About this activity

Discover the rugged Tzoumerka region through a balanced day combining nature, history, and culture—featuring a riverside trek to pristine waterfalls, a 12th-century clifftop monastery, and authentic village experiences. This 8-hour immersion showcases Greek Epirus at its most dramatic, from gorge hikes to century-old local traditions.

Action, fun and culture: the ideal combination for discovering the spectacular scenery and the rare natural beauty of Tzoumerka.

An easy river hike takes us to the waterfalls of Housia gorge on the beautiful path between the stone villages of Sirako and Kalarites. After a refreshing swim (for the brave ones, and during summer time) we visit the cliff hanging monastery of Kipina, built in a cave and dating since 1212. We head to the village of Kalarites and visit the folk art museum. Afterward, we enjoy our lunch with a variety of delicious local products at the oldest café and grocery shop in Greece, dating since 1840.

Insider tips

  • The local café serves limited dishes—arrive hungry and ask the owner for recommendations on daily specials
  • Summer months (June–August) are best for swimming in the gorge, but spring offers lush vegetation and fewer tourists

Good to know

  • Moderate fitness level required for the river hike; uneven terrain and some steep sections
  • Bring swimwear and towel if planning to swim; monastery visit requires covered shoulders and knees
  • Tour includes guide, lunch with local products, and museum entry; sturdy hiking shoes and sun protection essential
