About this activity

Combine two of Iceland's most dramatic glaciers with iconic South Coast waterfalls in a single 10.5-hour expedition from Reykjavík. Strap on crampons and explore the otherworldly ice formations of Sólheimajökull glacier, then descend to visit the thundering Skógafoss and elegant Seljalandsfoss waterfalls on the return journey.

Within a little less than two hours drive from Reykjavík is Eyjafjallajökull glacier, and just a little further the Sólheimajökull glacier tongue extends down from Mýrdalsjökull, Iceland´s fourth largest glacier.

A glacier hike is a great way to experience Icelandic nature. We take an easy glacier walk on crampons up on to the ice field where a wonderland of ice sculptures, ridges and deep crevasses awaits discovery.

During the hike you learn more about these disappearing giants. We will provide and teach you how to use basic glacier equipment for this tour.

On the way back we make two stops, at the striking waterfalls Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.

Highlights

  • Walk across Sólheimajökull glacier tongue on crampons with a trained guide
  • Discover ice sculptures, ridges, and deep crevasses on the glacier field
  • Learn about Iceland's retreating glaciers and their environmental significance
  • Visit two of Iceland's most photographed waterfalls: Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss
  • All glacier equipment provided and demonstrated pre-hike

Insider tips

  • Arrive early to maximize daylight on the glacier, especially in shoulder seasons when daylight hours are limited
  • Wear moisture-wicking thermal layers under your outer gear—glacier winds are deceivingly cold even on mild days
  • The Seljalandsfoss waterfall can be walked behind; bring a rain jacket for this photo opportunity
  • Sólheimajökull's tongue has retreated significantly; ask your guide about the glacier's retreat markers and historical extent

Good to know

  • Minimum fitness level required: comfortable hiking on uneven terrain for 2–3 hours on the glacier
  • Crampons, harness, helmet, and ice axe provided; arrive in sturdy hiking boots
  • Tour meets near Reykjavík (exact meeting point provided upon booking); nearly 2 hours each way driving
  • Suitable for ages 10+; pregnant travelers should consult the operator before booking
  • Tours run year-round, but winter may involve snow/ice requiring additional caution

Who it's for

Adventure seekers wanting a genuine glacier experience without multi-day commitmentNature photographers pursuing iconic Icelandic landscapesFit families with older children (10+) seeking activity-packed day tripsVisitors with limited time wanting to see multiple South Coast highlights in one tour

Best time to visit
