About this activity

A full-day open-roof 4×4 adventure combining a pristine 3-hour hike through Madeira's ancient Laurissilva forest to discover 25 waterfalls and natural springs, lunch on Europe's highest plateau, and coastal scenery from Cabo Girão's famous glass skywalk to the historic fishing village of Câmara de Lobos.

Going West to Rabaçal, a unique and magical place in Calheta, where we start a 3 hours walk (approximately) through an evergreen forest, providing great landscapes and wonderful sensations. On this hike, we will have the opportunity to admire beautiful waterfalls carved in ancient valleys, natural springs with the best water possible and its endemic species of flora (Laurissilva Forest) and fauna. After this great walk, we will have a lunch break (not included) in a typical Madeiran restaurant in Paúl da Serra, the biggest plateau of the island at nearly 1500 mts high with stunning views. Later on, we go downhill through a wonderful off-road to the South Coast, where you will see beautiful beaches. Continuing by the coast, we go to Cabo Girão, known by its suspended glass floor viewpoint which offers a spectacular panoramic view over the Atlantic, Câmara de Lobos and Funchal. Then, to finish our tour we drive through the oldest roads to Câmara de Lobos, an important fishing village in Madeira with interesting history and traditions.

Highlights

  • 3-hour guided walk through evergreen Laurissilva forest with endemic flora and fauna
  • Multiple waterfalls and natural springs carved into ancient valleys
  • Lunch break at Paúl da Serra plateau (1,500m elevation) with panoramic island views
  • Suspended glass floor viewpoint at Cabo Girão with Atlantic Ocean vistas
  • Off-road 4×4 descent to southern coast and charming fishing village of Câmara de Lobos
  • Open-roof vehicle experience for unobstructed photography and fresh-air immersion

Insider tips

  • Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip—the levada paths can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain
  • Bring a light waterproof jacket; mist and drizzle are common even on clear mornings in the forest
  • Pack snacks and water in addition to the lunch break; the high-altitude plateau can feel cooler than the coast
  • Arrive early to secure the best seat in the open-roof vehicle for unobstructed views of the coast descent

Good to know

  • Lunch at Paúl da Serra restaurant is not included in the tour price; budget accordingly for a typical Madeiran meal
  • Total duration is 8 hours including transport, walking, lunch stop, and all viewpoints; start time typically early morning
  • Comfortable hiking shoes essential; the levada walk is moderate but involves uneven forest terrain and some slippery sections
  • Open-roof 4×4 vehicle is weather-dependent; bring sun protection and layers for varying altitudes (sea level to 1,500m)
  • Minimum fitness level required for the 3-hour walk; not recommended for those with severe mobility limitations

Who it's for

Active nature hikers seeking pristine forest scenery and waterfall explorationPhotography enthusiasts interested in dramatic coastal landscapes and viewpoint perspectivesAdventure travellers wanting off-road 4×4 experiences combined with cultural stopsFamilies with older children or fit teenagers (8+ years, comfortable with moderate hiking)

Best time to visit

Visit during late spring through early autumn (May–October) for clearer skies and drier forest paths; mornings offer the best light for photography and lower mist in the Laurissilva forest, while afternoon drives along the coast benefit from golden-hour lighting.
