About this activity

Combine Madeira's most celebrated levada walk with an exhilarating 4x4 off-road descent through eucalyptus forest, capped by Europe's highest sea cliff. This 8-hour adventure pairs Alpine hiking with coastal drama, showcasing volcanic tunnels, endemic wildlife, and panoramic Atlantic views.

Rabaçal is an unique and magical place full of waterfalls and fountains. This levada walk is the most famous and beautiful in Madeira Island. This experience will start with about 3 hours walk including 800 mts through a volcanic rock tunnel leading us to an evergreen forest providing beautiful landscapes.

On this hike, we will have the opportunity to admire beautiful waterfalls, natural spring water and its endemic species of fauna and flora.

After this great walk, we will have a lunch break (not included) in a Madeiran restaurant at Paúl da Serra, the biggest plateau of the island about 1400 mts high with stunning views. Later, we go downhill through a fantastic off-road expedition, where you will enjoy the fragrance of the exotic eucalyptus forest.

Continuing, we go to Cabo Girão with the highest sea cliff of Europe at 580 mts, known by its suspended glass floor viewpoint which offers a spectacular panoramic view over the Atlantic Ocean and Câmara de Lobos Bay. (2 € p/p not included).

Highlights

  • 3-hour Rabaçal levada trek through 800m volcanic rock tunnel
  • Waterfalls, natural springs, and endemic Madeira flora and fauna
  • Paúl da Serra plateau (1,400m) with island-wide vistas
  • 4x4 open-roof off-road descent through fragrant eucalyptus forest
  • Cabo Girão sea cliff (580m) with suspended glass skywalk viewpoint

Insider tips

  • Wear waterproof layers and sturdy hiking boots—the tunnel section stays damp and can be slippery even on dry days
  • Book lunch ahead at Paúl da Serra; local restaurants fill quickly and service slows in peak season
  • The glass skywalk at Cabo Girão requires a separate €2 fee; if heights trigger vertigo, the cliff-top viewing area is equally breathtaking without it
  • Start early to beat afternoon clouds that roll in from the Atlantic and obscure high-altitude views

Good to know

  • Duration is 8 hours total; plan for 3 hours walking, 2 hours off-road, plus travel and lunch time
  • Lunch not included; bring cash (rural restaurants may not accept cards) or confirm card payment ahead
  • Open-roof 4x4 vehicle—bring sunscreen and a hat; weather can change rapidly at altitude
  • Moderate to challenging fitness required; the levada walk is mostly flat but involves uneven terrain and a long tunnel section
  • Meeting point and pickup logistics depend on your hotel location; confirm with supplier 24 hours before
