About this activity

A comprehensive 15-hour day trip from Side combining Turkey's most iconic natural wonder—the brilliant white travertine terraces of Pamukkale—with the extensive Greco-Roman ruins of Hierapolis above. This full immersion covers both geological marvel and ancient history in a single guided experience.

Your full day excursion begins in the early morning when you’re picked up at your hotel and begin the drive to Pamukkale. After a lunch break you’ll visit the cascading snow-white terraced cliffs of this mysterious Cotton Palace.

The calcite-laden waters that had created this unreal landscape come from springs located in a 200-meter high cliff that overlooks the plain. Marvel at the mineral forests, petrified waterfalls and the series of terraced basins created by these waters.

At the end of the 2nd century B.C. the kings of Pergamon established the thermal spa of Hierapolis. The ruins of the baths, temples and other Greek monuments can be seen at the site. The temples were significant trade centers for ancient Hierapolis.

See the Roman theater, the Apollo temple, Roman baths, fountains and the agora. After the tour, have a chance to swim in thermal pools. An additional option is to swim in Cleopatra’s Pool, for an extra fee.

Highlights

  • Walk across gleaming white calcite terraces shaped by mineral-rich thermal springs
  • Explore Hierapolis's Roman theater, Apollo temple, and ancient bath complexes
  • Swim in naturally heated thermal pools fed by 200-meter cliff springs
  • See petrified waterfalls and mineral formations created over millennia
  • Visit ancient Greek trade centers and temples from the 2nd century B.C.

Insider tips

  • Wear water shoes or sandals—the travertine terraces are slippery when wet; go barefoot on dry sections for the best photos
  • Arrive early at Pamukkale to avoid afternoon crowds and capture the terraces in softer morning light
  • Pack swimwear and a towel if you plan to use the thermal pools; bring extra cash for Cleopatra's Pool add-on
  • The drive is long (early pickup), so wear comfortable clothes and bring snacks or water for the journey

Good to know

  • Hotel pickup included; confirm meeting time and location with supplier the day before
  • Total duration is 15 hours including 2–3 hours driving each way and a lunch break (meal cost not specified)
  • Thermal pool entry and basic tour are included; Cleopatra's Pool requires separate paid ticket
  • Flat, well-maintained walking paths at both sites, though terrain is uneven travertine—not suitable for mobility limitations
  • Bring sun protection, hat, and sunscreen; limited shade at Pamukkale terraces
