Adventure activities release endorphins, creating lasting positive memories.

About this activity

Secrets of Alkmaar begins on Canada Plein and turns the old centre into a self-guided walking tour. From there the route leads past the Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk, across the Waagplein and along the Alkmaar City Hall. Every one of those places comes with something to notice and something to find out.

It is a game for friends, couples, families and colleagues who would rather look around than sit still. A single ticket covers a team of one to four people playing on one phone; larger groups divide into teams and buy a ticket each. Going solo is fine too. There is no guide and no fixed start time, so you decide how long you linger on each Alkmaar square.

How to play

Setting off in Alkmaar is simple:

  1. Book the Exploration Game
  2. Check the instructions email
  3. Download the Loquiz app
  4. Start playing whenever you like

The tasks mix riddles with photo assignments and questions that can only be answered on the spot. You will be reading facades, counting details and looking twice at things most people walk past. Around the Kapelkerk and the narrow lanes of 't Fnidsen you also pick up facts and stories about the cheese trade, the canals and the people who built this town.

Play with more than one team and the walk turns into a contest, with points for every answer and a leaderboard to compare. It works as well for a company outing as for an afternoon with friends. Pause for a drink and continue later if you like; the last task closes the loop back into the centre of Alkmaar.
