About this activity

Experience Peru's hidden desert playground just outside Lima with a thrilling combination of 4x4 off-road driving through undeveloped sand dunes and sandboarding instruction on pristine slopes. This full-day adventure takes you from coastal desert to panoramic Andean foothills, offering an adrenaline rush with dramatic backdrops.

Lima is located on the desert coast of Peru and has dunes just like the other great deserts of the world, only that they have not been released yet. Mainly because to travel these entertaining dunes you need to go in a 4x4 truck and with an expert offroad pilot. We will head along the Panamerican Highway for around 40 minutes and arrive at a point where the start of the Andean elevation to the east is in the form of sand, we will enter with a 4x4 truck and start our adrenaline Offroad circuit that will be driven with dexterity and skill for our expert pilot. Once on the top of a dune in the middle of the desert, we will be able to see the climb of the Andes to the East and the Pacific Ocean to the West. That's where we stop the vehicle and our professional Sandboard instructor takes the spotlight to show us how entertaining the sport of surfing the sand is. We will be around two hours learning, having fun and practicing.

Insider tips

  • Wear moisture-wicking layers and bring sunscreen; desert sun reflects intensely off sand and there's minimal shade
  • The 40-minute highway drive allows time to acclimate before physical activity—stay hydrated throughout
  • Best photos are taken from atop the highest dunes during mid-afternoon when shadows enhance the dune topology

Good to know

  • 7-hour total duration includes 40-minute transfer each way; active time on dunes is approximately 4–5 hours
  • Sandboarding is taught from beginner level; no prior experience needed
  • Wear closed-toe shoes with good grip for safety during off-road driving and boarding
  • The experience involves sitting in a moving 4x4 vehicle on unpaved terrain; expect bumps and dust
