About this activity

Paddle through two legendary Peloponnesian rivers—the mythical Lousios and the longest river of the region, Alfeios—as they cut through dramatic white limestone gorges dotted with ancient monasteries and hermit caves. This 4-hour rafting adventure combines accessible rapids (mostly Level 2–3) with pristine swimming holes and stunning landscape, suitable for beginners in summer or thrill-seekers in spring/autumn when water levels rise.

Lousios is the river where Zeus took his first bath after his birth. Alfios is the longest river of the Peloponnese and a god himself according to mythology. Both rivers flow through an impressive gorge, with white limestone cliffs rising above surrounded by prolific plant life even in the summer. Until the 20th century the river’s power was harnessed by numerous watermills, whilst the cliffs above provided refuge to hermits and monks in caves and cliff-hugging monasteries, the latter of which is still inhabited. Here, a unique rafting experience into two of the most beautiful rivers of Greece takes place.

Our trip starts from the bridge of Atsicholos in Arcadia. In the beginning, a brief training will be conducted by your river guide and you will be given wetsuits, lifejackets, helmets and paddles. We are ready to discover the hidden natural wonders of the area, have fun whilst paddling and swimming in the crystal-clear waters. The difficulty of the rapids we encounter during the trip is easy with a few moderate parts on level 2-3 based on the river rating of difficulty. During summer months’ river conditions and the volume of water makes this activity easier and suitable for everyone, beginners and families with kids. In Spring and Autumn, depending on the rainfall and the water volume the activity gets more challenging and ideal for those seeking more action and adrenaline. Previous experience is not required.

Highlights

  • Two rivers steeped in Greek mythology—Lousios (birthplace of Zeus) and Alfeios (river god)
  • Navigate white limestone gorges with 20th-century watermills and cliff-clinging monasteries still in use
  • Mix of gentle and moderate rapids (Level 2–3) with safe swimming breaks in crystal-clear water
  • Professional equipment provided: wetsuits, lifejackets, helmets, paddles; training included
  • Flexible difficulty—easy and family-friendly in summer, more challenging in spring/autumn

Insider tips

  • Visit in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October) for higher water levels and more engaging rapids, but expect colder water; summer suits families and nervous swimmers.
  • The monasteries perched on the cliffs are still inhabited—rafting gives you a rare perspective of these hidden monastic communities from the water.
  • Bring a waterproof bag or dry bag for valuables; the crystal-clear water is inviting but the gorge is remote.
  • The trip departs from Atsicholos bridge in Arcadia; allow extra travel time if coming from major towns like Nafplio (45+ minutes away).

Good to know

  • No prior rafting experience required; full briefing and training provided by your guide before launch.
  • All safety gear included: wetsuits, lifejackets, helmets, and paddles supplied.
  • Suitable for families and children in summer months when rapids are gentler and water volume is lower; check supplier age/health requirements.
  • Trip duration is 4 hours total (likely includes transport, briefing, and cleanup); plan full-day availability.
  • Remote gorge setting with limited facilities—bring water, sun protection, and wear secure footwear for pre- and post-paddle areas.

Best time to visit
