In the morning, we will leave Amsterdam by private car to the Zaan region, one of the most important areas in the industrial history of the Netherlands. We will start with a visit to theZaandam city center, where we will walk around the city to discover its modern architecture “LEGO houses”, and you will have free time to take pictures, walk quietly around the area or enjoy the local atmosphere next to the Zaan River.

Then you can choose whether to visit Zaans Schans orSchermerhorn, or both.

Zaanse Schans, where you will meet atraditional wooden clog factory, and you'll discover how the windmills worked that allowed the Dutch to drain entire lakes and develop their economy. During the visit, you will learn how these products are made and their importance in daily life and commerce.

Next, we will move toSchermerhorn, in the middle of the Dutch polder, to understand how windmills and hydraulic engineering transformed old lakes into fertile land. We will walk through this historic 14th century town and, optionally, you can visit one of its museum mills and enjoy panoramic views of the rural landscape.

The last stop will beAlkmaar, a historic city known for its cheese-making tradition. We will walk through its old town, theFishing Square (Waagplein)and its channels, and we'll enjoy afree tasting of Dutch cheeses, before returning comfortably to Amsterdam.

🏘️Zaandam — Architecture and Creativity

Our first stop will be atZaandam, in front of the famousInntel Hotell, known as the “LEGO houses”. This surprising building, designed by architect Wilfried van Winden, is comprised of more than 70 traditional green houses from the Zaan region, stacked one on top of the other as a tribute to local architecture.

Here you will discover how Holland combinestradition, creativity and modernity, and why this region was one of the country's first industrial centers. It's a perfect place for photographs and for understanding Dutch architectural evolution.

🌾Schermerhorn — Mills, Polders and Engineering

We will continue to the heart of theSchermerhorn polder, one of the best examples of Dutch hydraulic engineering.

Here you will get to knowStep by step how the Dutch transformed water into fertile soil, using windmills, gears and a perfectly coordinated system. We will visit theSchermerhorn Museum Mill(optional entry), one of the mills that participated in the desiccation of the old Schermeer lake in the 17th century.

From the top of the mill you will enjoySpectacular views of the Polder, a landscape that sums up Dutch ingenuity and perseverance. Afterwards, we will walk through theHistoric village of Schermerhorn, an old fishing enclave from the 14th century where you can still breathe the calm of the Dutch countryside.

🧀Alkmaar — City of Cheese and History

Our last stop will beAlkmaar, one of the most authentic and elegant cities in the North of Holland.

  You will discover the famous Plaza de la Pesa, where the traditional cheese market has been held since the 16th century. You will learn the history ofcheese carriers(cheese porters) and the role of the Waaggebouw building.
• Free cheese tasting
  You will enjoy aFree tastingof typical cheeses such as Gouda, Edam or goat cheese, learning about their maturation processes and flavors.
• Church of St. Lawrence (Grote Kerk)
  An imposing 15th century Gothic church with organs made of more than 5,000 tubes. Here you will learn why Alkmaar was a symbol of resistance during the Eighty Years' War, when the city defeated the Spanish army in 1573, giving rise to the motto:“Victory starts in Alkmaar”.
• Canals and old town
  Final walk along the canals, bridges and streets of the old town, surrounded by sloping houses, traditional shops and charming terraces.
