Self-Guided The Nijmegen Syndicate City Escape Game

Your team starts on the Grote Markt in Nijmegen and climbs almost at once: the Stevenskerk and the ring of houses on Sint Stevenskerkhof stand on the highest ground in the old town. From there the route drops toward Mariënburg and the Arsenaalpoort. Nijmegen is built on a slope above the Waal, and this outdoor escape game uses the height difference throughout.

The slope is the thing to plan for, with a few short climbs and a set of steps, easy enough for most people but worth knowing about beforehand. Families, friends, couples and colleagues all play it. Two to five players form one team with a single phone; larger groups split into several. Every player takes a character with a role in the mission, so the group has to keep talking. Nobody guides you, and no start time is imposed on you.

Magnus carried the stolen formulas through Nijmegen and left a broken trail behind him. Your team decodes it, works through the riddles and completes the photo tasks, from the Korenmarkt down to Museum De Bastei near the river. The characters hold different pieces, and the case only moves when they are laid side by side.

With several teams on the trail the game becomes a contest, and that is why work groups book it. Stopping is fine: leave it for an hour, then take it up again. It makes an unhurried afternoon of walking between the higher and lower halves of Nijmegen.
