1 / 6Private Day Trip: Chengdu to Leshan and Luocheng by Train
About this activity
Explore two UNESCO-listed masterpieces in a single day: the colossal Leshan Grand Buddha (71m, carved in 803 AD) and the boat-shaped Luocheng Ancient Town with its Ming Dynasty architecture. A seamlessly coordinated private guide and driver experience combines train travel with intimate cultural immersion outside Chengdu's city limits.
Meet your private guide in the lobby of your central Chengdu hotel at 7:30am. From here, it's a short journey to Chengdu East station where you can catch the train to Leshan in just under an hour.
It's just a brief drive from the station to the Leshan Grand Buddha. Completed in 803 AD, during the Tang Dynasty, it stands 233 feet (71 meters) tall, and even its fingernails are as long as a human being! The largest surviving ancient Buddha, it forms part of the Mount Emei Scenic Area UNESCO World Heritage Site, and sits at the confluence of the Min, Dadu, and Qingyi rivers.
After you've scaled the steps to admire the Buddha, and taken some time to appreciate the landscape, embark for Luocheng Ancient Town, about 38 miles (60 kilometers) from Leshan.
Built in 1628 in the shape of a boat, Luocheng is famous for its well-preserved original architecture. Your guide will help you navigate the pretty town as you take photos, taste local foods, and perhaps chat to a local or two.
Once you're done exploring, you'll drive back to Leshan railway station to catch the train back to Chengdu. A driver will collect you from the station and transfer you back to your hotel, arriving around 8:30pm.

Insider tips
- ★Arrive at the Buddha early (before crowds); the afternoon light for photography is often obscured by river mist and tour groups
- ★Wear comfortable, grippy-soled shoes—the stone steps to the Buddha are steep and can be slippery, especially after rain
- ★In Luocheng, venture beyond the main plaza into side alleys where elderly residents still work traditional crafts and family restaurants serve authentic Sichuan fare
- ★Ask your guide to introduce you to a local family or shop owner; many speak Mandarin only, but your guide can facilitate genuine cultural exchange
Good to know
- •Total duration is 13 hours (7:30am hotel pickup to ~8:30pm return); bring snacks, water, and phone chargers for the train journey
- •Wear layers: Leshan sits at a confluence prone to temperature and humidity shifts; Luocheng can be cooler in winter
- •The Buddha steps are uneven and can be challenging for those with mobility issues; confirm accessibility concerns with supplier beforehand
- •Train tickets and all entries are typically included; confirm inclusions in your booking confirmation
- •Central Chengdu hotel pickup/drop-off included; specify your exact hotel address at booking to ensure seamless 7:30am collection
Who it's for
Best time to visit
Visit during clear-sky autumn (September–November) or spring (March–May) when visibility at the Buddha is highest and humidity is moderate. Early morning at the Buddha site (before 10am) beats mid-day crowds; afternoon light can be diffused by river mist.
