About this activity

Escape Shanghai's urban sprawl for a full-day immersion in Wuzhen, one of China's best-preserved water towns with over 1,500 years of history. Travel by private car with a dedicated guide, exploring ancient architecture, narrow canals, and authentic Ming-Qing era streets before returning to your hotel by evening.

Today you will be picked up from your centrally located Shanghai at 8am, then take 2-hour car ride to Wuzhen Water Town. This is an ancient water town with a long history of over 1500 years. Upon arrival, you will visit the old houses, lanes, temples, corridors, and scholar's home etc. It is nice to view the wooden boats in the canal. Chinese lunch is included at local restaurant.

Later you will be transferred back to your Shanghai hotel where the day tour concludes.

Highlights

  • Ancient stone bridges and willow-lined canals lined with wooden boats
  • Ming-Qing dynasty architecture including scholar's residences and ancestral temples
  • Narrow pedestrian lanes and hidden courtyards frozen in time
  • Traditional Chinese lunch at a local restaurant included
  • Private car with flexible pacing — no large group rushes

Insider tips

  • Wuzhen has two scenic areas (East and West); confirm which your guide covers, as they offer different atmospheres
  • Wear comfortable, flat shoes — lanes are narrow, cobblestoned, and can be slippery when wet
  • Visit early in your morning exploration to beat day-trippers and capture better photos in softer light
  • Bring a light rain jacket; canal mist and sudden showers are common, especially in spring and autumn

Good to know

  • Hotel pickup from central Shanghai included; confirm exact location and time (8am departure) with supplier
  • 2-hour each-way drive from Shanghai — total day commitment is approximately 9 hours
  • Chinese lunch included; notify supplier in advance of dietary restrictions
  • Pace is self-guided within the town; your driver/guide can point out highlights but you explore at leisure
  • No specific accessibility notes provided — cobblestone streets and narrow lanes may challenge mobility devices
