About this activity

A full-day premium excursion from Puerto Varas combining two of southern Chile's most dramatic landscapes: the emerald Petrohué waterfalls in Puyehue National Park and the perfectly conical Osorno Volcano with its expansive lake views. This journey showcases the raw beauty of the Lake District with guided hikes through native forests and across volcanic terrain.

Join us to explore the Osorno volcano. On the way, pass by typical wooden churches, Chilean farm houses and the town of Ensenada. Drive through a thick forest of mostly native Coigües to reach Chile’s oldest National Park. Visit the waterfalls of Petrohué and hike a short trail through native forests. We will get back to the car and drive on heading to the slopes of the Osorno Volcano where we will make a short hike over lava fields and enjoy the impressive view over the Lake Llanquihue.

Highlights

  • Short forest hike to Petrohué waterfalls in Chile's oldest national park
  • Walk across lava fields on Osorno Volcano's lower slopes
  • Panoramic views over Lake Llanquihue and surrounding peaks
  • Drive through native Coigué forest and colonial wooden architecture
  • Pass through the village of Ensenada and traditional Chilean farmland

Insider tips

  • Wear waterproof layers—the forest canopy keeps mist around the waterfalls year-round, and weather changes quickly at altitude
  • The volcanic lava field hike offers the best views mid-morning when clouds typically lift; position yourself accordingly
  • Bring a camera with a wide lens; the lake and volcano vistas are vast and reward panoramic shots

Good to know

  • Total duration is 9 hours including driving, short walks, and stops—comfortable walking shoes essential
  • Puyehue National Park entrance fee may apply (confirm with operator)
  • Hikes are described as short and accessible but involve uneven terrain and elevation gain
  • Hotel pickup/drop-off typically included in Puerto Varas; confirm exact meeting point and time when booking
