About this activity

Explore two of Bulgaria's most distinctive natural and cultural treasures in a single day: the historic riverside town of Lovech, birthplace of revolutionary hero Vasil Levski, and the spectacular Krushunski Waterfalls, the country's highest travertine cascade. This 10-hour excursion from Sofia blends Ottoman-era heritage with pristine nature, including a surprise visit to Devetashka Cave.

Lovech – the old town and Varosha quarter – where are located the ethnographic complex and the Vasil Levski house museum. Lovech is known as the center of the Internal Revolutionary Organization of the revolutionary Vasil Levski in his struggle for liberation from Ottoman rule. In the highest part of the old town are the remains of the Hisarya fortress. Near the fortress is the monument to Vasil Levski. The covered bridge over the Osam River is the symbol of Lovech. The bridge connects the old and new parts of the city. It was built in 1872-1874 by the builder Kolyu Ficheto, and today it houses numerous shops where you can buy souvenirs. Stratesh Hill is another popular place for walks and is home to the Lovech Zoo.
Krushuski Waterfalls - one of the most attractive landmarks of the country. The waterfalls are the highest travertine cascade in Bulgaria. An eco-trail with bridges and stairs has been made through the water cascade.
Devetashka Cave - bonus in your prograam for first time.

Highlights

  • Walk the iconic 1874 covered bridge by master builder Kolyu Ficheto—lined with artisan shops and offering views of the Osam River
  • Explore Vasil Levski's house museum and the revolutionary's monument in the old town's fortified quarter
  • Hike the scenic eco-trail through Krushunski Waterfalls with built-in bridges and stairs navigating the travertine tiers
  • Visit the remains of Hisarya fortress overlooking Lovech's old town
  • Discover Devetashka Cave, a geology and history site, as a bonus stop

Insider tips

  • Wear waterproof shoes or sandals at Krushunski Waterfalls—the eco-trail involves crossing streams and getting close to cascades
  • Visit the ethnographic complex in Varosha to see traditional Bulgarian crafts and architecture up close before exploring the covered bridge shops
  • Bring a camera with zoom; the cave interior and waterfall formations offer dramatic photography, especially in bright daylight

Good to know

  • Bring comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and a light jacket—the waterfall area is cool and shaded despite outdoor exposure
  • Total duration is 10 hours including travel from Sofia; expect 2–3 hours of moderate walking across terrain and stairs
  • Devetashka Cave is included as a bonus; it's unlit in parts, so a headlamp or phone torch is useful
  • Souvenir shops operate on the covered bridge; local handcrafts, textiles, and food items are available

Who it's for

History enthusiasts interested in Bulgarian revolutionary heritage and Ottoman-era architectureNature lovers and outdoor hikers seeking dramatic waterfall landscapes and cave explorationPhotographers drawn to travertine formations and riverside landscapesCultural travellers wanting a balanced day combining heritage sites with natural attractions

Best time to visit

Visit in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October) when waterfalls run at full flow, temperatures are mild, and crowds are lighter. Avoid winter when water volume drops and paths become slippery; summer heat can be intense on the exposed bridge and town walks.
