About this activity

Explore two of the Sacred Valley's most enigmatic sites—the ancient salt ponds of Maras and the mysterious circular terraces of Moray—on a guided mountain bike descent that reveals Pre-Inca heritage and Inca engineering away from the main tourist routes.

These areas are located in the sacred valley and the best way to reach them is by mountain bike which take you off the beaten track. Maras is an Andean village characterized by its salt mines, that date back to Pre-Inca times, and its great views of snow capes. About 7km away the amazing circular terraces of Moray are located, an Inca agricultural research station designed for experimenting with crops at different altitudes.

Highlights

  • Ride downhill through remote Andean villages and farmland
  • See centuries-old salt evaporation ponds still worked by local families
  • Visit Moray's concentric terraces, believed to be an Inca agricultural laboratory
  • Panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and the Sacred Valley
  • Access sites rarely reached by large tour groups

Insider tips

  • The ride is mostly downhill; fitness level matters less than balance and brake control on uneven terrain
  • Bring a light layer—mountain air is cool even on sunny days, and you'll gain/lose elevation quickly
  • Visit early morning to beat afternoon clouds that obscure mountain views and make photography harder

Good to know

  • Tour includes bike, helmet, and typically a guide; confirm what's provided when booking
  • Terrain is rugged mountain track and steep sections—not suitable for beginners or those uncomfortable on unpaved roads
  • Meeting point is usually in central Cusco; allow travel time (30–45 min) to trailhead
  • Bring sunscreen, water, and a camera; snacks may not be available at remote sites
