About this activity

Just south of Heraklion, Knossos is the island’s most popular attraction, and for good reason – it’s absolutely fascinating. This is one of our excursions that gives you a local flavor of the destination while showcasing its unique, authentic and responsible values.

The hub of Crete’s Minoan civilization, it’s where the fearsome Minotaur was said to have lurked in a labyrinth. Your guide explains the myths surrounding Knossos Palace and its kings as you explore its treasures, including the throne room, royal apartments and frescoes. And kitted out with a tablet, a handy app uses the very latest technology to bring all the monuments to life in stunning 3D.

Minoan Dance Theater Performance "Minoan Feast of Wine Harvest"

After the beverage, guests watch the dance theater performance “Minoan Feast of Wine Harvest”. A group of women and men represent the Minoan procession to the "Minoan Feast of Wine Harvest".

The set is the facade of a house in the Cretan countryside and in a scenery of olive and vine trees. The performance is accompanied by the sounds of the Minoan musical instruments: guitars, flutes, sistron and drums. Groups of women and men arrive from the fields carrying baskets and trays with grapes and fruit. The men empty the baskets in the crusher. The women place the trays on the sills and enter the house. On their way back, they carry water for the men to wash their hands and treat them a glass of wine, while one of the men steps rhythmically on the grapes.

The men sing a hymn in honor of Kouros Zeus and dance to a dance for male dancers. Naked young men bearing shields chant the hymn. They imitate the Kourites, the kind young daemons who protected and brought the holy baby up. It is an invocation for the annual return of the young god for him to bless harvests and flocks.

Then, the women dance a light dance for female dancers. The sun sets. The dancing women farewell the day and dance a ceremonial bacchic dance.

It’s then time to head to Heraklion, Crete’s capital. See the Venetian lion fountain and the loggia on a guided walk around the city before have free time to wander about at your own pace. Maybe you could go shopping at the market, walk round the Barbour walls or visit the 16th century Venetian fortress.
