About this activity

Experience Sri Lanka's premier elephant sanctuary on a 6.5-hour guided safari through Kaudulla National Park, departing from Sigiriya or Dambulla. Explore one of Asia's most biodiverse zones by open-air jeep, where wild Asian elephant herds, water buffalo, deer, and hundreds of bird species roam freely in their natural habitat.

Start at the Your Hotel in Sigiriya or Dambulla about 1.30 PM
Proceed to Kaudulla
At the entrance to the national park, we will board an all-terrain jeep and begin our brilliant safari in Kaudulla! Along the way, you will discover why this part of the island has been declared an area of great biodiversity and special protection for birds. Hundreds of wonderful species coexist in this beautiful corner of Asia!
Then we take a break so you can have lunch - please remember to bring your own picnic. With our strength back, we will continue the safari by observing the Asian elephants of Kaudulla. The enormous mammals are grouped into herds distributed around different areas of the national park.

In addition to elephants, during the safari, we will see other wildlife such as Sri Lankan buffalo and deer. Kaudulla is also home to an impressive number of species of Asian reptiles which you will also encounter on the trip.

Highlights

  • Spot wild Asian elephant herds in their natural environment
  • Observe Sri Lankan buffalo, deer, and over 100 bird species
  • Open-air jeep safari through protected biodiversity hotspot
  • Afternoon departure with flexible lunch break at your own pace
  • Expert naturalist guide explaining park ecology and wildlife behaviour

Insider tips

  • Bring binoculars and a camera with good zoom for distant wildlife photography—animals won't approach vehicles
  • Pack your own picnic lunch to maximise flexibility; the break is unguided and allows you to eat at your preferred spot in the park
  • Wear neutral earth tones (greens, browns, khakis) rather than bright colours to avoid startling animals and improve wildlife sightings
  • The afternoon safari timing coincides with peak elephant activity and water-hole congregations—bring sunscreen and a hat for open-jeep exposure

Good to know

  • Hotel pickup included from Sigiriya or Dambulla; confirm your exact accommodation at booking
  • All-terrain jeep is open-sided with bench seating—not suitable for those with severe mobility restrictions; inquire about vehicle layout in advance
  • Lunch is not provided; you must bring your own food and water (no commercial options inside the park)
  • Afternoon departure (approx. 1:30 PM) means you're back by evening; plan morning activities separately
  • National park entrance fees may be included or charged separately—confirm before departure

Who it's for

Wildlife photographers and birdwatchers seeking in-depth biodiversity exposureFamilies with school-age children interested in Asian megafauna and nature educationSafari enthusiasts looking for authentic open-jeep experiences away from crowded tourist circuitsNature lovers wanting a half-day excursion from Sigiriya without multi-day commitment

Best time to visit

Visit during the dry season (June–September and December–February) when animals concentrate around waterholes and visibility is best. Afternoon safaris in these months offer optimal elephant sighting odds as herds move toward water sources before dusk.
