Things to Do in Sigiriya

Sigiriya Rock is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka's most visited attractions, rising 200 metres above the surrounding plains.

The rock fortress was built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa I as a royal palace and fortress, and was abandoned after his death, remaining hidden until rediscovery in the 19th century.

The famous frescoes of women (apsaras) painted on the western face of the rock date back over 1,500 years and are among the oldest surviving paintings in Sri Lanka.

Sigiriya is home to a mirror wall, an ancient polished brick wall so smooth it once reflected the king's image like a mirror—visitors can still see their reflections today.

The site features an ingenious ancient water management system including fountains, pools, and channels that still function, demonstrating advanced hydraulic engineering from the 5th century.

Sigiriya is surrounded by extensive gardens, including boulder gardens and water gardens that are older than the rock fortress itself.
