About this activity

Experience Iceland's most dramatic glacial landscape on this 14-hour south coast expedition, featuring the otherworldly Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon with drifting icebergs, black Diamond Beach, and multiple waterfalls and coastal landmarks. A comprehensive showcase of Iceland's southeast wilderness, combining raw natural power with accessibility from Reykjavík.

The Glacier lagoon, Jökulsárlón, and it's surrounding glacial wonderland is truly one of a kind and certainly not to be missed. The Glacier Lagoon is a stunning force of nature which is fed with icebergs from one of the the offsprings of the largest ice caps in Iceland, Vatnajökull. Part of the scenery is the black basalt iceberg decorated Diamond beach. As the ice breaks away from the melting glacier it drifts through the lagoon and towards the ocean which creates a very unique landscape that is constantly moving and shifting. We will also make time during the drive to visit well selected places on the south coast including the stunning Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon (bonus stop if time allows), the hidden gem Stjórnarfoss waterfall, the mysterious Seljalandsfoss waterfall that you can walk behind and the charming Vík village with it's black sand beach and majestic Reynisdrangar seastacks

Being located in the south east some 380 km from the capital, The Glacier Lagoon tour is our longest day tour (14 hrs) but most certainly worth the drive.

Highlights

  • Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon — icebergs calving from Vatnajökull ice cap
  • Diamond Beach — black volcanic sand studded with translucent ice shards
  • Walk behind Seljalandsfoss waterfall for an immersive perspective
  • Stjórnarfoss hidden waterfall and Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon (weather permitting)
  • Vík village and Reynisdrangar sea stacks — dramatic basalt formations
  • 380 km round-trip scenic drive showcasing Iceland's south coast transformation

Insider tips

  • The lagoon's appearance shifts constantly as ice melts and drifts — no two visits are identical; arriving mid-morning catches better light on icebergs.
  • Wear waterproof layers for waterfall visits; Seljalandsfoss spray is heavier than it appears from a distance.
  • Diamond Beach is best explored during calmer weather when ice chunks accumulate along the shoreline in larger quantities.

Good to know

  • 14-hour duration includes 6+ hours driving; bring entertainment and snacks for the coach.
  • Waterproof jacket and sturdy, non-slip hiking shoes essential; terrain includes wet rocks and black sand.
  • Meeting point is Reykjavík; confirm exact pickup location and time (typically early morning departure).
  • Bathroom facilities available at main stops, but fewer options between attractions — plan accordingly.
