About this activity

Explore a dormant volcano on Greece's Methana Peninsula and hike into its crater, part of the same volcanic arc as Santorini and Milos. After a 3-hour trek through forested slopes with sweeping views of the Argosaronic Gulf, reward yourself with a soak in natural thermal baths—a rare combination of geological adventure and wellness in one day trip from Athens.

Today you will discover one of Greece’s volcanoes, part of the South Aegean Volcanic Arc together with the volcanoes of Santorini, Milos, and Nisiros islands. The last eruption occurred at 1700 AC.

Methana Peninsula is located in Northeast Peloponnese known for its thermal baths and the volcano close to the village Kameni Chora (Burnt Village).

Our 3-hour trek starts from Palaia Loutra village and ends inside the crater of the non-active volcano. En route, we will pass through dense forest with a majestic view of the Argosaronic Gulf inclusive of the Agkistri & Aegina islands.

Arriving at the crater we will walk on the frozen lava and the volcanic rocks before heading to the natural thermal baths, where we will have time to relax and rejuvenate our body and soul after our trekking experience.

Please note: This tour includes hotel pick up and drop off service. Simply select your hotel from the pick up list and our driver will be on his way.

Highlights

Insider tips

  • Bring swimwear and a towel; the thermal baths are a highlight, not an afterthought—plan to spend time soaking
  • Start early: the 12-hour duration includes travel from Athens, so daylight matters for both safety and crater photography
  • Wear proper hiking boots with ankle support; volcanic rock is sharp and uneven underfoot
  • The forest section offers good shade, but bring sunscreen for exposed crater areas and water resistant to sweat

Good to know

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off included; select your Athens accommodation from the provided list at booking
  • 3-hour trek is moderate difficulty; volcanic terrain is uneven but not technically challenging
  • 12-hour total duration includes round-trip transport from Athens (roughly 90 minutes each way)
  • Bring a light backpack, sturdy hiking shoes, swimwear, towel, sunscreen, and 1.5–2L water
  • Not wheelchair accessible due to volcanic terrain and crater hiking
