Come cycle the 42km Great Western Greenway with a local qualified private cycling guide in beauriful County Mayo. The Great Western Greenway is the longest off-road walking and cycling trail in Ireland. The world class Great Western Greenway is a traffic free cycling and walking trail, which follows the route of the renowned Westport to Achill railway which closed in 1937.

The Greenway traverses Ireland’s Atlantic coast between Westport town and Achill Island and visits the picturesque villages of Newport and Mulranny. It passes by some of the West of Ireland’s most dramatic mountains and offers magnificent views of Clew Bay and its many islands. This package includes a local qualified cycling guide as well as a delicious gourmet packed picnic lunch to enjoy per person. Bikes available: Pedal, children and Canadian buggy.

Insider tips

  • Start early to catch the best light on Clew Bay and avoid afternoon crowds on the trail
  • The Greenway is mostly flat and well-maintained—ideal for mixed fitness levels, but bring layers as Atlantic coastal weather changes quickly
  • Stop in Mulranny village for a swim or tea break; the trail passes right through charming local spots worth exploring
  • Ask your guide about the railway history—many sections still show the original trackbed and old station buildings

Good to know

  • Duration is 8 hours total (includes guide, cycling time, lunch, and stops)
  • Multiple bike options available: standard pedal cycles, children's bikes, and Canadian buggies for families

Best time to visit

Visit May to September for reliable weather and longest daylight hours. Morning departures (before 11:00) offer calm conditions and better photography light on the bay. Avoid winter months (November–February) when Atlantic storms and reduced daylight limit visibility and comfort.
